About The Position

The Off-Shift Nurse Manager provides clinical, operational, and administrative leadership for evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday operations within University Health Services. This role is responsible for supervising off-shift nursing staff and medical assistants, ensuring safe and efficient patient care delivery, supporting regulatory compliance, and maintaining continuity of operations across a 24/7 care environment. Serving as the senior onsite clinical and administrative leader during off-shift hours, the Nurse Manager oversees staffing, patient flow, escalation management, and implementation of departmental policies and clinical standards. The position also provides direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner based on operational needs and supports the Associate Director of Nursing Administration in broader nursing leadership responsibilities. This role is essential in translating daytime administrative and clinical operations into a coordinated and unified off-shift model that supports high-quality, student-centered care.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing required.
  • Current Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner licensure required or ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Current national certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner required.
  • Minimum of three years of Nurse Practitioner clinical experience required.
  • Experience with electronic medical records required.
  • Advanced clinical assessment and decision-making skills consistent with Nurse Practitioner practice.
  • Strong leadership, staff supervision, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to manage clinical operations, staffing, and patient flow within a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Experience supporting quality improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
  • Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior nursing leadership, charge nurse, supervisory, or management experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in ambulatory care, urgent care, college health, student health, or healthcare administration preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner within the outpatient clinic and infirmary setting as operational needs require.
  • Serve as the senior clinical decision-maker during off-shift operations, exercising independent clinical judgment regarding patient care, triage, escalation, and emergency response.
  • Support continuity of care through effective communication and handoff practices between day and off-shift providers.
  • Participate in the clinician on-call rotation.
  • Cover essential operational clinical functions during staffing shortages or call-outs, including triage and nursing support functions as necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to evidence-based practice, clinical protocols, and professional standards of care.
  • Lead responses to urgent and emergent clinical situations and coordinate appropriate escalation and follow-up care.
  • Provide operational oversight for evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday clinical operations.
  • Supervise off-shift nursing staff and medical assistants, including scheduling, coaching, performance management, staff development, and disciplinary processes.
  • Manage staffing coverage and respond to off-shift staffing emergencies and workflow challenges.
  • Lead shift huddles and monitors patient flow, staffing utilization, and operational efficiency.
  • Reinforce departmental policies, procedures, and clinical workflows to ensure consistency across shifts.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, university, and professional regulatory standards, including HIPAA, OSHA, and Board of Nursing requirements.
  • Serve as the primary communication liaison between day and off-shift clinical operations.
  • Support onboarding, orientation, competency validation, and ongoing professional development for off-shift clinical staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety monitoring, incident review, and operational assessments.
  • Analyze operational and clinical data to identify trends and recommend process improvements.
  • Assist with supply management, cost containment strategies, and operational planning.
  • Support recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of nursing staff and medical assistants.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation and reporting consistent with organizational and regulatory standards.
