The Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and delegating activities for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the unit. This includes collaborating with other hospital departments and leadership, providing resources and guidance for evidence-based practice, identifying and utilizing processes for optimal data and information delivery to staff, and preparing the unit, environment, and staff to meet credentialing bodies' requirements. The role also involves identifying key drivers in the throughput process, evaluating areas of responsibility, and developing solutions to barriers. Additionally, the Nurse Manager plans and manages patient care processes to improve performance, facilitates the delivery of quality patient care, ensures documentation meets hospital and credentialing standards, and demonstrates a positive, supportive role in the change process. Human resources responsibilities include staffing based on patient care needs, personnel functions such as performance reviews and corrective action, promoting professional growth and development, recognizing and rewarding accomplishments, promoting staff retention, facilitating new staff orientation, and supporting shared decision-making through the unit-based council. The Nurse Manager also incorporates customer needs and expectations into daily operations and business planning, promotes team building strategies, and manages operating and capital budgets effectively. Professional accountability includes involvement in professional organizations, participation in hospital/department/system committees, staying current with professional activities, alerting appropriate individuals regarding ethical and legal concerns, educating and evaluating the use of the chain of command, acting as a role model/mentor, adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics, complying with hospital policies and the Nurse Practice Act, participating in community activities, making appropriate referrals to Peer Review, participating in 360-degree evaluations, creating development plans, completing reports in a timely manner, and utilizing various resources for development.
