The Ambulatory Care Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and coordinating ambulatory care services, and for managing personnel to ensure effective patient care. As a key member of the site leadership team, the Nurse Manager focuses on quality care and serves as a role model for staff. Key responsibilities include fostering a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, conducting performance evaluations, and addressing problems to enhance processes. The Nurse Manager responds to patient and staff needs, assists with clinical and legal issues, and collaborates with departments to improve service excellence. They oversee staffing needs, prepare schedules, manage budgets, and participate in recruitment. The Nurse Manager also works with Materials Management for supplies and maintains effective communication with staff. They implement conflict-resolution strategies and foster a positive work environment that emphasizes teamwork and the core values of compassion, dignity, inclusivity, and respect. Additionally, they maintain staff licensure records and facilitate orientation to ensure competent performance. Demonstrates clinical knowledge and skills in supervision and directs staff in its application. Provides direct patient care as needed to meet patient needs or to role-model behavior. Establishes/maintains processes to promote a multidisciplinary team approach in developing, implementing, and evaluating patient care and/or family education. Conducts performance management monitoring and participates in problem identification and solutions to improve key processes/systems/patient care, shares results in staff meetings. Encourages staff participation in performance management activities. Participates on a voluntary or appointed basis in inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary committees to improve patient care. Investigates incidents and occurrences and institutes corrective action as appropriate. Promotes a safe and risk-free environment for patients and staff. Responds to patient/family needs in a timely, positive manner and ensures service excellence among all staff. Acts as a resource for staff for clinical/legal issues, and regulatory & policy matters. Refers as appropriate. Responds to staff, provider, and patient satisfaction needs and identifies and implements solutions in collaboration with related departments as needed. Plans for staffing needs of the sites on a long- and short-term basis, adjusted based on workload and other staffing variables to maintain safe, efficient care effectively. Prepares clinical support staff schedules promptly. Monitors appropriate use of benefit time. Approves overtime for nurses and medical assistants. Monitors site staffing to budget, overtime/agency use, and provides justifications as needed. Interview and recommend applicants for clinical support positions with the site director and nurse recruitment. Counsels and coaches clinical support staff concerning their work performance and development; holds staff accountable for performance. Establishes work performance and clinical competency of personnel on a timely basis and makes recommendations for promotions, transfers, and discharges. Takes corrective action and/or disciplinary action with staff in collaboration with human resources. Collaborates with Materials Management and Purchasing to obtain appropriate supplies and equipment and ensures proper utilization and maintenance of these items on the unit. Monitors budget in collaboration with the site director. Participates in the annual staffing/plan budget review process. Maintains effective, ongoing, and timely communication with staff and maintains records of meetings. Utilizes effective conflict resolution strategies when dealing with staff, providers, patients, and family members. Establishes a pleasant work environment conducive to teamwork, growth, and recognition. Serves as a liaison to all other departments at Wyckoff Hospital and demonstrates effective team building and problem-solving strategies in interactions. Makes recommendations on staff educational needs and independently and in conjunction with others plans educational activities. Maintains clinical in-service attendance record. Ensures staff compliance with annual mandatory in-service training, e.g., Environments of Care, Infection Control, etc. Identifies and meets learning needs to maintain competency and respond to new clinical management expectations. With other members of the Senior Nursing Management team, uses available utilization data to determine the division's overall staffing needs; works with clinical and non-clinical Managers to develop staffing plans and schedules, and to maintain appropriate staffing levels and staffing mix for units; monitors compliance. Selects, hires, and supervises Nurse Managers and Assistant Nurse Managers and participates in the selection and hiring of other ancillary clinical staff; initiates disciplinary action, including terminations; carries out annual performance appraisal of employees, recommending promotions, raises, etc. Conducts divisional and leadership staff meetings to review patient care issues, communicate changes in policies and procedures, and implement corrective action as necessary. Provides clinical supervision, guidance, and professional development of nursing staff. Evaluates clinical support staff structure, proposes and coordinates changes. Coordinates interrelationships of outpatient/inpatient referral system, ancillary support services, inter-clinic services, and agency communication. Promotes and enforces a culture of safety and ensures appropriate patient safety standards and guidelines are implemented throughout the delivery of health care. Assist divisional management in developing clinical and other information and resources to assist clinical and non-clinical Managers in directing their areas efficiently and allocating resources appropriately to provide therapeutic and effective patient care. Provides and communicates information to members of the healthcare team on a variety of clinical and administrative matters (e.g., new products, equipment, and techniques); makes recommendations to management on implementation and/or acquisition of new products/techniques; conducts in-services as required. Acts as liaison with medical staff, the Chairman, and other departments. Directs the maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies, and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff. Reviews standards and related policies and procedures for compliance with regulatory agency requirements; recommends and implements changes as required; ensures changes are communicated to staff; and monitors and reviews departmental and unit compliance with reporting requirements. Works with Nursing leadership and members of the healthcare team to develop, monitor, implement, and evaluate nursing standards. Works with other members of the nursing senior leadership team to develop performance improvement and patient safety programs, reviews, monitors, clinical indicators, utilization issues, and other related matters, and provides information and reports as required by the medical center and regulatory agencies Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Assures practices and employees comply with all applicable laws, regulations, standards, and other requirements imposed by any level of government or regulatory agency, including but not limited to TJC, OSHA, and the DOH. Performs other related duties as assigned.
