About The Position

The Nurse Manager provides leadership, clinical practice, and staff development for one nursing unit. They are responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating nursing practice at the unit level. The Nurse Manager ensures high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical and support staff, and appropriate resource and service management related to patient care. They must also ensure services and care are provided in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures, demonstrating fiscal responsibility and accountability. The Nurse Manager is responsible for implementing executive strategies into frontline reality by effectively and efficiently managing and leading in their area(s) of responsibility for strategic, financial, and human resource plans, performance improvement initiatives, and appropriate clinical practice knowledge and technology.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Valid Florida RN license is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
  • Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit-specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Unit Specific Credential
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - Unit Specific Credential

Nice To Haves

  • Management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Employees hired into this position before January 2006 are grandfathered in to BSN requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Define and implement nursing's strategic plan, ensuring the area of responsibility is fully integrated into the overall strategic goals and objectives.
  • Improve employee engagement through collaboration, reviewing employee satisfaction results, turnover, exit interviews, and other metrics.
  • Recognize team members for great performance and contribute to staff retention by providing supportive and mentoring relationships.
  • Collaboratively develop, communicate, and monitor performance expectations.
  • Promote a results-oriented environment and ensure effective communication regarding department successes and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support a Just Culture Model for reporting unsafe practices.
  • Oversee the ongoing improvement of quality and performance metrics, including core measures, hospital-acquired infections, safety initiatives, and the patient experience, evidenced by daily rounding on patients and utilization of the iRounding tool.
  • Monitor and evaluate service indicators in collaboration with related team members, evidenced by active involvement in patient experience committees and implementation of new processes.
  • Facilitate education of employees related to service excellence.
  • Role model behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Expertise).
  • Assume responsibility for the continuous growth and development of employees and daily operations of the unit, including strategic succession planning.
  • Serve as an organizational change agent, evidenced by engaged staff members in process improvement initiatives.
  • Formulate unit objectives, goals, and specific strategies consistent with the organization's.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all providers.
  • Advocate for and involve the multi-disciplinary team when major changes are planned, utilizing the shared governance model to communicate information.
  • Lead the Labor Management Partnership team in developing staffing efficiencies, service excellence, employee satisfaction, and continuous improvement in quality outcomes.
  • Function as a role model to promote the Mission, Vision, philosophy, code of ethics, and CARE values of the organization.
  • Ensure the performance improvement program is interdisciplinary and aligned with the organization's.
  • Cultivate and sustain a culture of innovation, continual learning, and accountability.
  • Partner with other disciplines to drive and sustain positive change within the unit(s).
  • Attend leadership classes offered by the leadership development team.
  • Collaborate to improve quality metrics using established process improvement technologies.
  • Facilitate change and foster staff engagement and involvement.
  • Promote staff participation in shared governance Council and unit-level decision making.
  • Perform relevant cost-benefit and other impact analysis using financial models, flowcharting, and other quantitative methods.
  • Monitor and manage unit finances and productivity, justifying monthly variances.
  • Understand and maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements and JHS policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and demonstrate current knowledge of trends in healthcare administration as it relates to nursing practice and quality care.
  • Design and implement flexible staffing models that assure adequate staff to care for patients while meeting unit targets.
  • Provide a professional environment that is physically, emotionally, and psychologically safe for nurses.
  • Follow and perform all related unit-specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit-specific competency check-list.
  • Utilize job and unit-specific equipment as required.
  • Perform all other related job duties as assigned.
