About The Position

The Nurse Manager - Emergency Department role is responsible for planning, organizing, and delegating activities for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the unit. This includes collaborating with other hospital departments and leadership, supporting evidence-based practice, and ensuring staff are prepared to meet credentialing bodies' requirements. The role focuses on improving patient care outcomes through effective management of patient care processes, ensuring documentation meets standards, and demonstrating a supportive role in change processes. Human resources responsibilities include staffing based on patient care needs, conducting performance reviews, promoting professional growth and development, facilitating new staff orientation, and supporting shared decision-making. The position also involves incorporating customer needs into operations, promoting team building, preparing and managing operating and capital budgets, and identifying patient care requirements based on acuity and guidelines. Professional accountability includes involvement in professional organizations, hospital committees, staying current with professional activities, and educating staff on the chain of command. The Nurse Manager acts as a role model and mentor, adheres to ethical and legal standards, and participates in evaluations and development plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required
  • 3 Years Experience as a registered nurse with previous experience as a charge nurse or similar leadership role (i.e., charge nurse, committee chair, preceptor, supervisor) Required
  • RN - Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required
  • BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly Required
  • Knowledge of industry standards: organization, theory, principles, and research processes, quality improvement and change management techniques, financial analysis, budget process and planning, accreditation and regulatory standards, strategic planning principles, ability to assess nursing care requirements based on nursing principles, scope of practice, and regulatory standards.
  • Ability to solve problems, think outside-the-box, and be resourceful.
  • Must be result-oriented, a quick learner and self-starter.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and delegate activities for safe, efficient, and effective operation of the unit.
  • Provide resources and guidance to support the utilization of evidence-based practice standards.
  • Identify and utilize processes and resources that support optimal delivery of data and information to staff.
  • Facilitate activities that prepare unit, environment, and staff to meet credentialing bodies requirements.
  • Identify key drivers in throughput process, evaluate areas role, and develop solutions to barriers.
  • Plan and manage patient care processes to improve performance.
  • Facilitate delivery of quality patient care.
  • Require documentation that meets hospital and credentialing standards/policy/guidelines.
  • Demonstrate positive supportive role in change process.
  • Responsible for staffing based on patient care needs.
  • Responsible for personnel functions including staff, performance reviews and corrective action.

  • Manage approved operating and capital budgets effectively and adjust strategies as needed to meet budget expectations.
  • Identify and evaluate patient care requirements and outcomes based upon patient acuity, system and budgetary guidelines.
  • Demonstrate involvement in professional organization.
  • Participate in hospital/department/system committees.
  • Stay current with professional activities.
  • Alert appropriate individuals regarding ethical and legal concerns (i.e. Risk Manager, Compliance Officer, Director).
  • Educate, promote and evaluate appropriate use of chain of command by staff.
  • Act as a role model/mentor.
  • Adhere to ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Comply with hospital policies and with Nurse Practice Act.
  • Active in Reach Out THR and other community activities.
  • Make appropriate referrals to Peer Review.
  • Participate in 360 degree evaluations.
  • Create development plan that identifies and addresses areas of needed growth.
  • Complete reports in a timely manner.
  • Utilize various resources for development.
