About The Position

This is the first level of professional nursing work involving the care and treatment of the developmentally disabled and mentally or physically ill. Work includes performing general nursing activities on wards in hospitals for the physically or mentally ill or in infirmaries of other state institutions. Supervision may be exercised over paraprofessional staff. Work is performed under general supervision.

Requirements

  • A license as a Registered Nurse as issued by the Maine State Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Pours, sorts, and distributes medication (e.g., pills, liquids) to clients in order to ensure residents receive proper medication on schedule.
  • Pours, sorts, and withdraws substance and inserts into syringes, inserts needle into body of client in order to give injections and/or nutrients.
  • Intervenes therapeutically when patient exhibits signs of behavioral escalations or problems in order to overcome situation.
  • Measures blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, and respiration and records results in order to record vital signs of client.
  • Visually observes clients' reaction, behavior, appearance, etc. in order to assess client status and progress.
  • Organizes and summarizes sequence of steps by which clients may achieve specified results or goals in order to formulate and revise treatment and discharge plan.
  • Writes, transcribes, and records information from notes, charts, visual observation, and verbal reports in order to chart and record client information and progress.
  • Assigns tasks and directs workers in order to ensure client needs are adequately met.
  • Assembles and sets up medical equipment; inserts catheter tubes; administers enemas, douche, and suppository; and applies and changes dressings in order to provide appropriate nursing care.
  • Checks medical supplies, and requests necessary items in order to maintain required supply levels.
