About The Position
Join UT Health East Texas as a variable-shift, PRN Nurse Extern. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Nurse Extern performs authorized functions and basic nursing tasks, including patient care, reporting patient conditions and circumstances, and maintaining equipment and unit cleanliness. The extern must demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served on the assigned unit. The position may require irregular schedules and may involve exposure to hazardous materials or situations, including blood-borne pathogens, ionizing radiation, and communicable diseases. UT Health Athens is a 127-bed facility with a 24-hour emergency department, Level IV trauma center, acute stroke-ready designation, advanced diagnostic technology, a 10-bed ICU, maternity unit, radiation therapy center, and a stand-alone emergency department in Gun Barrel City.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited professional nursing program and in good academic standing.
- Anticipated completion of the nursing program within 24 months from the date of hire.
- Knowledge of medical technology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Obtain BLS certification within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and before providing direct patient care.
