About The Position

A Nurse Extern works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. They work collaboratively with the patient care team, performing direct patient care under the direction, delegation, and supervision of a registered nurse. The Nurse Extern documents patient care given, monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to the supervising RN. They maintain positive professional relationships with patients/families, coworkers, and the healthcare team. Responsibilities include assisting patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation. They collaborate across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs. The Nurse Extern evaluates learning needs of patients and/or families and provides education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances. They act as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient and support the performance improvement philosophy. Nonessential functions include assisting with the orientation and training of personnel and students, participating in meetings, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • School of Nursing 3rd year student or higher
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
  • Supports performance improvement philosophy.
  • Assist with orientation and training of personnel and students.
  • Participates and attends meetings as required and/or assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
