The Nurse Extern is a non-physician student professional nurse who provides individualized, age-specific, and indirect bedside nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, utilizing the nursing process. This role involves observing, reporting, and responding to patients' various needs, including physical, psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety/risk, and discharge planning. The Nurse Extern performs direct patient care activities as directed by the RN, recognizes subtle changes in patient condition, and effectively transitions patient care by reporting essential information. Documentation of patient vital signs, intake/output, height/weight, and ADLs is also a key responsibility. Additionally, the role includes maintaining a clean work environment and assisting with organizing supplies, tracking, stocking equipment, and departmental organization.
