About The Position

The Nurse Extern role provides expanded clinical experience for professional (RN) nursing students and assists Registered Nursing staff with patient care activities. The role participates in patient care planning, implementation, observation, and evaluation, and reports significant observations to a Registered Nurse. The position provides care within the extern’s scope of practice and supports patient comfort and safety.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Nursing student who has completed the first clinical rotation of an accredited professional (RN) school of nursing program.
American Heart Association BLS CPR certification, to be obtained within 7 days of hire.

Responsibilities

Accurately check patients’ blood sugar and document results as ordered, reporting all values to the attending nurse.
Obtain vital signs appropriately based on each patient’s age and condition, and immediately report abnormal findings to the attending or charge nurse.
Perform patient interventions completely and proficiently within the scope of practice, demonstrating age-specific competency for the patient population served.
Provide appropriate treatment in emergency situations, such as codes and patient falls.
Notify the nurse of changes in a patient’s condition.
Perform related duties as required.
