The Nurse Extern II (NE II) role in the Operating Room (OR) is a part-time, temporary position designed for nursing students in their final year or recent graduates. Externs will work full-time for 6-8 weeks during the summer. This role involves assisting Registered Nurses with patient care activities, including daily living tasks, vital signs, and blood glucose monitoring. The NE II collaborates in care planning, evaluates patient responses to interventions, and communicates observations to the Registered Nurse. They also develop delegation skills, administer medications under supervision, manage an increased patient load with time management principles, and synthesize patient data. In emergencies, they participate in activities they are skilled in, under supervision. The role also includes patient positioning and transporting duties requiring physical exertion. The NE II must demonstrate age-appropriate care knowledge and skills, understanding growth and development principles.
