About The Position

This position is responsible and accountable for assessing, planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating staff development and educational activities designed to address identified or anticipated needs of learners for assigned areas. The role assures the quality of patient care and clinical practice progression through the assessment, coaching, and development of nursing staff and collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. This includes all aspects of clinical practice, patient care, workplace safety, and the outcomes of care patients receive. The specialist participates in the development and implementation of educational programs for the entire Nursing Department. Key responsibilities include communicating, educating, and monitoring changes to clinical practice and expectations, reviewing documentation, providing additional support to staff, and reporting non-compliance to management. The role also involves collaborating with the leadership team in strategic planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of systems to support and enhance nursing staff competence, autonomy, and accountability. As a member of the nursing leadership team, the specialist participates in interview panels, orientation, and annual regulatory and clinical competency requirements. They also assist in ensuring department compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control procedures. A significant aspect of the role is promoting a culture of safety, reporting on Safety Intelligence Reports, and investigating serious reportable events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Education, or related healthcare field.
  • Active RN license in the State of Massachusetts.
  • BLS Certification.
  • ACLS Certification.
  • At least 3 years of clinical nursing experience in an emergency department.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a clinical preceptor and/or charge nurse role.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation computer software.
  • Frequent use of computer, keyboard, printer, and educational equipment (teaching manikins, simulators, LCD projectors).
  • Ability to read printed materials.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Education, or related healthcare field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching.
  • Process improvement experience.
  • Skilled in the care of ED patients and ED inpatient boarder patients.

  • Acting as a member of the nursing leadership team, participating in interview panels, orientation, and regulatory/clinical competency requirements.
  • Reporting unprofessional or unsafe practice to the Nurse Manager.
  • Assisting the Nurse Manager to ensure department compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control.
  • Promoting a culture of safety within the organization.
  • Reporting on all entered Safety Intelligence Reports.
  • Conducting initial review and investigation of safety reports and escalating serious reportable events immediately to the Nurse Manager.
