About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Nurse Clinician to function as a clinical lactation expert. This position is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient’s family, significant others, and members of the health care team. This role will have a primary focus caring for lactation needs of NICU and newborn inpatients.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 1 - 3 years of current Lactation consultant, NICU, or OB nursing experience
  • Maintain current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
  • Demonstrated expertise in specific clinical area of practice
  • Demonstrate excellent patient interaction/communication/education
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills

Responsibilities

  • Providing lactation assessment, management, education and instruction
  • Performing consultations, rental or sale of lactation equipment and supplies, telephone triage, and prenatal education as appropriate
  • Offering post-delivery consultative care to patients: breastfeeding/chest feeding, family bonding and planning, etc.
  • Coordination and management of care for patients, including those with complex needs.
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers, being an advocate for the patient at all times
  • Evaluating patient's response to care and initiates independent and/or collaborative changes where appropriate
  • Coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services.
  • Coordinate patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visit and possible admission, pre-schedules testing, follows up with test results to both patient and physician, obtains medical history, coordinates follow up visit appointment, provides medication, rehabilitation teaching, etc.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of division/unit quality assessment and improvement programs.
  • Use relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems.
