About The Position

In an environment that supports continuous improvement and under the management and supervision of the Communicable Diseases/Sexual Health Program Nursing Manager and Supervisor, the employee in this position provides investigation and the related follow-up of reportable and non reportable communicable diseases, including sexually transmitted disease, on a day-to-day basis. Work load is variable and the ability to prioritize is an important aspect of the position. This employee provides HIV counseling and point of care and anonymous HIV testing for clients requesting this service. This employee examines patients for sexually transmitted disease and ensures that necessary examination and treatments are carried out. This employee provides family planning information and counseling, and under the direction of the physician/nurse practitioner, will provide specifically selected contraceptive supplies. This employee assists with liaison and referrals to other health personnel and agencies. Other duties include harm reduction services, the promotion of educational programs for the public and other professionals and providing immunization. The nature of the work requires a high degree of confidentiality and tact. Duties also include responsibility for recording.

Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Minimum of 2 years recent experience as a public health nurse
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Course credits in public health nursing
  • Good knowledge of principles, techniques and practices governing public health nursing.
  • Good knowledge of needs of healthy and unwell individuals.
  • Considerable knowledge of prevention, transmission and treatment of communicable diseases, particularly of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Knowledge of communicable disease surveillance programs.
  • Knowledge of public health laws and regulations and Primary Health Care policies relating to the control of communicable diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, non-judgmentally and effectively with people.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with agencies, physicians, co-workers and clients.
  • Ability to perform technical nursing duties with skill and competence.
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality.
  • Ability to make mature judgments of human behavior and to make decisions.
  • Ability to plan and carry out duties with a minimum of supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of epidemiology and epidemiological approaches to communicable disease control.
  • Knowledge of family planning, methods and counselling.
  • Knowledge of community health and social resources.
  • Ability to practice effective communication skills, written and oral.
  • Ability to provide first aid in emergency situations.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable.
  • Skill in maintaining and promotion of health practices through effective contacts with physicians, school students, parents, senior citizens, professional groups and community organizations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relations as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Willingness to accept supervision.
  • Willingness to grow professionally and personally.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate (BCLS)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)
  • Possession and ability to maintain a current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) prior to employment.
  • Ability and willingness work evenings/weekends as required
  • Ability to travel when necessary including visits to hospital, community facilities and agencies and client homes

  • Education infectious disease control, sexually transmitted diseases, family planning and epidemiology would be an asset.
