About The Position

The Public Health Nurse (PHN), as an integral member of the Population and Public Health Services team, provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health Promotion Model and Primary Health Care. The Public Health Nurse translates knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health-enhancing behaviors of individuals, families and population groups through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy. Inherent in this role are knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, prevention, and protection. This employee works relatively independently and is expected to make decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with The Public Health Act, the policies of the Public Health Nursing program and the Health Authority, the SRNA Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, and other relevant legislation. This employee liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, other sectors and community groups. The Public Health Nurse works within guidelines established by Health Authority policy to plan, organize, implement and evaluate nursing programs in an assigned area, under the direction and supervision of a Public Health Nursing supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Demonstrates application of the nursing process
  • Uses independent judgment based on Public Health principles.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the community at large.
  • Identifies the importance of culture on health.
  • Evaluates nursing interventions in individual, group and community outcomes.
  • Health Promotion strategies include building healthy public policy
  • Uses knowledge of determinants of health in interactions with clients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in educational resource development.
  • Ability to be self-directed
  • Knowledge in conflict resolution techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of prevention used in promotion, prevention and protection of health.
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.
  • Willingness to adhere to established Public Health policies and procedures.
  • Focus on strengthening community action and reorienting health services
  • Applies understanding of child development.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of multiple health promotion strategies
  • Demonstrates knowledge in community development/assessment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in media communication and social marketing.
  • Uses independent judgment based on evidence-based practice.
  • High level of accuracy in health assessment, nursing diagnosis and treatment.
  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
