About The Position

The Nurse Assistant will demonstrate competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards. This includes personal care, pre- and post-operative care, post-mortem care, assisting with ambulation and exercise, and proper positioning of patients. The role also involves accurately performing and documenting intake/output, vital signs, weights, and other monitoring, including computerized charting, and promptly notifying the nurse of any abnormal findings. The Nurse Assistant will assist in identifying patients at risk for falls and implementing fall prevention measures, while maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. They will also perform glucose monitoring via fingerstick and implement admission, transfer, and discharge procedures according to AHF/unit standards. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for establishing therapeutic relationships and ensuring timely communication of patient/family issues. The role requires strong time management, prioritization, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills. The Nurse Assistant will participate in maintaining supplies, equipment, and unit cleanliness, and demonstrate self-growth and accountability through participation in quality assurance activities and maintaining awareness of policy changes. Competency in complex care activities within their home units, as determined by unit need, is also required, which may include preceptor training, respiratory care, and dressing changes. The Nurse Assistant will assist in achieving unit quality scores that meet or exceed hospital/national averages for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Ability to communicate with patients, staff, and coworkers.
• Spends much of the day walking and standing on tile or carpet, bending, stooping, and sitting.
• Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
• Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
• Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
• Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds, specific to the job class evaluation.
• Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
• Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds specific to job class evaluation.
• Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.

Nice To Haves

• BLS, CPI
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
• One year of experience taking care of patients and dealing with the public preferred.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards, including personal care for all body systems, pre- and post-op/procedure care, post-mortem care, patient in restraints, placement of electrodes for cardiac, respiratory and/or fetal monitoring, assisting with ambulation and exercise, patients with infectious diseases, correct positioning of patients, transfer of patient, and transportation of patients.
• Demonstrates competency in skin care protocols and care.
• Accurately performs/documents intake/output, vital signs, weights and other monitoring, including computerized charting.
• Promptly notifies nurse of abnormal vital signs, observations, physical complaints, etc.
• Assist in identifying patients at risk for falls and preventing falls.
• Maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for the patient, including correct handling of body fluids and appropriate cleaning of equipment between patients.
• Demonstrates utilization of proper body mechanics and appropriate lift techniques/resources.
• Performs glucose monitoring via fingerstick.
• Implements admission, transfer and discharge procedures, according to AHF/unit standards, including assisting with timely admission, discharge or transfer, providing explanations of the physical environment, accurately recording relevant information, collecting and forwarding personal belongings, assuring unused equipment and supplies are cleaned/removed, and utilizing discharge process for bed tracking.
• Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal skills, assuring timely and appropriate communication of patient/family issues, establishing therapeutic relationships, utilizing appropriate lines of authority, maintaining confidentiality, demonstrating effective conflict resolution skills, and demonstrating awareness of satisfaction issues.
• Demonstrates competence in time management and prioritization, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking, organization of work and environment, and timely response to patient/nurse needs and requests.
• Participates in maintaining supplies, equipment and unit cleanliness, including maintaining a neat and orderly appearance of patient areas, restocking supplies, reporting broken equipment, ensuring appropriate charges are made, properly handling and cleaning equipment, and efficiently using supplies, linen and dietary items.
• Demonstrates self-growth/accountability by participating in quality assurance and PI activities, attending unit meetings, maintaining awareness of policy changes, verbalizing how their job supports organizational/departmental goals, demonstrating cultural commitments, assuring competency is maintained, and complying with unit-specific articulated job expectations.
• Demonstrates competency in all required complex care activities within their home units as determined by unit need, which may include preceptor training, glucose monitoring and quality control checks, respiratory care, CPR training, dressing changes, monitoring drainage tubes, procedure/equipment set-up, and administering tube feedings.
• Assists in achieving unit quality scores which meet or exceed hospital/ national average for nurse-sensitive quality indicators such as skin breakdown, falls, and others as appropriate for the unit.
