The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) delivers procedural anesthesia care as part of a team under the supervision and medical direction of an attending anesthesiologist. The CRNA conducts accurate, ongoing patient assessments, communicates with healthcare team members, uses resources efficiently to deliver optimal care, and thoroughly documents care in appropriate records. The CRNA administers general or regional anesthetics, or monitored anesthesia care, during surgical and/or obstetrical procedures. The CRNA evaluates situations and informs the attending anesthesiologist of the patient’s condition, recommends anesthetics and administration techniques, and proposes necessary supportive measures for approval by the attending physician as required by departmental guidelines. The CRNA checks anesthesia machines, monitoring equipment, supplies, medications, and anesthesia gases; monitors and records patient vital signs; and records medications administered and related reactions and responses.
