About The Position

Ocean Atomics is an American company designing, licensing, and assembling a standardized nuclear electric power plant and the surrounding support systems for maritime applications. We will install these plants on any vessel built to our nuclear-ready standards, and will provide end-to-end sustainment in our planned nuclear lifecycle dockyard. We will help develop the licensed operators to unlock this new capability for your energy intensive application at sea. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Direct experience developing safety cases and PRA models for nuclear or comparable safety-critical systems.
  • Proficiency with PRA methods and tools (fault tree/event tree analysis, reliability data, SAPHIRE or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of nuclear safety standards and regulatory frameworks (NRC, IMO, naval, or international equivalents).
  • Early-career engineers with PRA or safety analysis exposure through internships, coursework, or early-career roles in nuclear or other safety-critical industries (L1-L2).
  • Have led at least one complete safety case or PRA development cycle through design review or licensing submission, in commercial nuclear, naval reactors, or comparable regulated environments (L3-L4).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with marine or naval reactor systems, or safety-critical systems in other regulated maritime or aerospace domains.
  • Background interfacing directly with regulators or classification societies (ABS, LR, etc.) on licensing submissions.
  • Advanced degree in nuclear engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the safety case and supporting PRA models (event trees, fault trees, and risk quantification) for the reactor and associated ship systems.
  • Identify initiating events and failure modes, perform hazard and accident analyses, and quantify risk to verify compliance with safety acceptance criteria.
  • Use PRA findings to inform and optimize engineering design, feeding risk-driven requirements directly into system architecture decisions.
  • Support design reviews and trade studies, translating safety findings into requirements and design changes for secondary and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Maintain safety documentation and traceability through configuration changes, operational feedback, and as-built modifications.
  • Lead engagement with regulators, classification societies (ABS, LR, etc.), and internal review boards, and prepare licensing and certification deliverables (at L3-L4).
  • Mentor newer engineers and review their PRA models and safety analyses (at L3-L4).
