About The Position

The Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) department is seeking engineering support for the Risk-Informed Capital Initiatives team. This team is responsible for leading strategic initiatives and implementing risk-informed applications across the nuclear fleet. The team collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and deploy risk-informed decision-making tools and processes that enhance safety, optimize operations, and support regulatory compliance. The contractor will collaborate with Duke Energy stakeholders and cross-functional teams to develop and deploy risk-informed decision-making tools and processes that enhance safety, optimize operations, and support regulatory compliance. With appropriate on-boarding, the contractor is expected to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound engineering judgment, and deliver high-quality work products that may be used with limited rework.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent degree).
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience (Duke Energy nuclear experience strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and adhere to schedules, meet deliverables/commitments, and provide status updates.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proactive problem identification and solution development.
  • Experience with Boolean logic development and/or analysis with large fault trees.
  • Experience in the utility industry, at a site/station, preferably in Engineering or Operations.
  • Familiarity with fundamental BWR or PWR plant systems.
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning, and execution of assigned work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments.

Nice To Haves

  • SRO certification, RO or SRO license, or Technical Nuclear certification
  • Advanced knowledge of probabilistic risk assessment methodologies and risk-informed applications (e.g., RI-ISI, 10 CFR 50.69, risk-informed technical specifications) and related regulatory requirements.
  • Experience using Probabilistic Risk Assessment software, especially CAFTA and/or PHOENIX Risk Monitor (or comparable tools).
  • RO or SRO license, or SRO certification.
  • Proficient in principles of project management; MBA and/or PMP designation viewed favorably.
  • Demonstrate broad knowledge of PRA principles, practices, and procedures; analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and support development of standards relevant to the assigned scope.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and implementation support for strategic risk-informed applications and initiatives across the nuclear fleet (e.g., Risk-Informed Completion Times, Surveillance Frequency Control Program, and 10 CFR 50.69 categorizations including development of Alternative Treatments), including development of technical bases and supporting documentation.
  • Specifically, this will entail the following tasks, at a minimum: Research and provide reference documentation to third parties, Coordinate reviews with site resources, Research and resolve system design and operations questions that arise from 50.69 categorization and/or alternative treatment activities.
  • Provide engineering/technical expertise to identify, analyze, and resolve complex issues; assess impacts on a system and fleet-wide basis; and communicate options and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Apply technical rigor and operating experience to produce risk-informed solutions that optimize safety, support regulatory compliance, and enhance operational decision-making.
  • Plan and execute assigned work with appropriate estimating, scheduling, and status reporting; manage multiple workstreams where limited standardization exists and solutions require independent problem solving within area of expertise.
  • Prepare and maintain thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, calculations/analyses, and supporting documentation; recommend process and standards enhancements as appropriate.
  • Perform engineering studies and analyses with technical responsibility for coordinating inputs across stakeholders; support project execution by providing technical products, facilitating reviews, and documenting decisions.
  • Ideally the contractor would already have effective working relationships to coordinate activities with engineering, operations, licensing, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills suitable for technical and leadership audiences.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed project records and files in accordance with Duke Energy requirements.
