About The Position

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a large and busy healthcare provider, serving as the largest safety-net hospital in New England. It is committed to providing excellent and accessible health services and is the primary teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine. BMC is seeking a Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Staff Technologist to join their team. This role involves patient care, preparation and administration of radiopharmaceuticals, quality control, and operation of imaging and laboratory instrumentation. The technologist will be expected to stay current with advancements in the field and learn new modalities as they become available.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's of Science in a scientific field with a certificate in Nuclear Medicine Technology from an accredited academic program OR an Associate's in Nuclear Medicine Technology from an accredited academic program plus 2 years experience.
  • Current registration in Nuclear Medicine (NMTCB or ARRT (NM)).
  • At least one of the following advanced certifications and current registries: NMTCB(PET), NMTCB(NCT), ARRT(CT), ARRT(MR).
  • Current Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist License.
  • NIH Human Subjects Protection in Research Certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Nuclear Medicine Information System (NMIS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
  • Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Must present a positive, team-oriented attitude and a professional appearance.
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards set forth by the Radiology Department, BMC and other regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to interact with other staff technologists.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Ability to set priorities and solve problems.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency requests.

Responsibilities

  • Operates imaging equipment including gamma cameras, SPECT, PET, PEM, diagnostic CT, diagnostic MR, and bone density scanners.
  • Performs In-Vivo diagnostic testing, including procurement, preparation, quality control, dispensing, dose calibration, and administration of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Performs laboratory tests, including safe handling of radiopharmaceuticals and non-radioactive chemicals, and manipulation for analysis.
  • Operates laboratory equipment such as scales, centrifuges, pipettes, flow hoods, and detection devices.
  • Collects samples for laboratory procedures and performs in-vitro diagnostic testing and laboratory analyses.
  • Works within the nuclear pharmacy to procure, prepare, compound, perform quality control, dispense, calculate doses, identify, document, administer, dispose, and safely handle radioactive materials.
  • Performs chemical, physical, and biological tests on compounded radiopharmaceuticals and interprets results.
  • Ensures compounded radiopharmaceuticals meet specifications described in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monograph.
  • Assists in the application, management, preparation, and administration of radiotherapeutic procedures and non-radiopharmaceutical agents.
  • Prepares patients for exams, ensuring comfort and modesty, and accommodating patient and staffing needs through flexibility.
  • Performs appropriate studies as determined by policy and procedure, ensuring exams match patient condition and history.
  • Completes requisitions, interview questionnaires, and gathers necessary patient information.
  • Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients and monitors tissue or organ characteristics and functions.
  • Observes metabolic changes, providing additional imaging and variations of techniques as requested.
  • Completes procedures properly and in a timely fashion, providing quality work.
  • Documents procedures, including ICD9 codes and demographics, for correct interpretation and billing.
  • Participates in IV line placement, blood glucose monitoring, and pharmaceutical/radiopharmaceutical training.
  • Maintains current applicable licenses, registrations, and certifications.
  • Participates in and passes the National Institute of Health's Human Subjects Protection in Research Certification Training.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Performs all procedures utilizing ionizing radiation safely and effectively, complying with regulations.
  • Performs radioactive decontamination procedures and disposes of radioactive waste.
  • Assures patient radiation safety and understands radiation safety issues through annual training.
  • Maintains and adheres to managed care guidelines and equipment through interaction with management and vendors.
  • Performs patient-focused customer service and ensures standards are achieved.
  • Communicates patient complaints professionally to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Handles telephone calls and requests for services professionally and appropriately.
  • Treats patients and staff with dignity and respect.
  • Ensures all required documentation for billing purposes is properly completed.
  • Understands and adheres to managed care guidelines.
  • Works scheduled hours or according to operational needs, including on-call hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Follows all departmental established policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards for decision making.
  • Trains and mentors student technologists, teaching protocols, IV placement, and performing evaluations.
  • Provides assistance and information on patient cases and reports to providers.
  • Performs duties in all department areas, including all BU/BMC medical campuses as needed.
  • Provides service and care to patients of all ages and conditions.
  • Monitors patient condition and involves nursing, physician, or other personnel when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
