About The Position

This position is responsible for performing Nuclear Medicine examinations on patients of all ages, including child, adult, and geriatric populations. The technologist will coordinate studies with various departments to ensure efficient patient flow, prepare patients for examinations, explain procedures, and ensure their safety and comfort. This role involves operating complex Nuclear Medicine equipment, managing radioactive isotopes, preparing and shipping radioactive materials, and maintaining equipment calibration and safety checks. The technologist will also operate diagnostic computer equipment for image acquisition and analysis, prepare radiopharmaceuticals, and work with the Radiation Safety Officer and other relevant personnel to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations. Additionally, the role includes performing cardiac nuclear medicine procedures, adhering to infection control policies, and maintaining accurate records. The technologist must prioritize exams, manage workload efficiently, and provide excellent service to all patients and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Valid Massachusetts state license as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist
  • Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT NM) and/or certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)
  • 1-2 years experience in Nuclear Medicine
  • Ability to use and learn complex computer systems to process nuclear medicine images and generate reports.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification required

Responsibilities

  • Perform child, adult, and geriatric Nuclear Medicine examinations.
  • Coordinate studies with various departments for efficient patient flow.
  • Receive and prepare patients for examinations, explaining procedures and ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Assist physicians in procedures.
  • Receive and review requests for Nuclear Medicine studies and assess patient condition.
  • Operate highly complex Nuclear Medicine equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of technical supplies and radioactive isotopes, reorder as needed.
  • Monitor all isotopes on hand, calculate remaining isotope from half-life data, and ensure safe disposal of unused material.
  • Prepare and ship used radioactive shipments and receive radioactive shipments in compliance with NRC and USDOT rules and regulations.
  • Set up and calibrate all equipment daily, including floods, dose calibrator standardization, survey meter checks, and well counter checks.
  • Perform weekly Bar Phantoms, monthly Intrinsic Floods and IRC analysis, and Quarterly pm Calibrations.
  • Perform daily hot lab surveys and department surveys, including area surveys and weekly surface wipe tests.
  • Operate and maintain diagnostic computer equipment for image acquisition, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Prepare appropriate radiopharmaceuticals relative to age and weight specific needs of the patient.
  • Work in conjunction with the Radiation Safety Officer, Radiation Physics Consultant, and Director of Radiology to maintain control over radioactive materials and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Measure and administer radioactive materials to patients for diagnostic testing.
  • Coordinate and perform various types of cardiac nuclear medicine procedures in conjunction with the stress testing laboratory.
  • Perform computer analysis on resulting data and images for physician interpretation.
  • Demonstrate use of universal precautions and adhere to OSHA blood-borne Pathogens Standards and other Infection Control Policies.
  • Ensure proper shielding and radiation protection for all patients, and question patients of childbearing age accordingly.
  • Maintain equipment and examination room cleanliness, and report malfunctions immediately.
  • Prepare and administer radioisotopes under the supervision of a physician authorized user.
  • Monitor patients' conditions for safety and alert appropriate personnel when necessary.
  • Prioritize individual exams, with critical/emergency patients seen first.
  • Coordinate work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during assigned shift.
  • Adjust and revise schedule as necessary for stat orders.
  • Maintain up-to-date A.R.R.R.T. registration, Massachusetts license, DOT Training, and CEU's.
  • Perform technical and clerical duties in the department as needed.
  • Attend mandatory in-service programs and comply with all hospital and departmental safety practices.
  • Be responsible for accreditation of ICANL and follow ICANL protocols in the outpatient cardiac area.
  • Prepare quarterly reports.
  • Participate in QA meetings.
  • Maintain nuclear lab records, including maintenance of nuclear equipment.
  • Act as a physician liaison for issues with the digital reporting system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
