About The Position

Nuclear Medicine Technologists will prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes as directed by a Radiologist. They utilize specialized equipment to monitor the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs where radiopharmaceuticals localize. Additionally, Nuclear Medicine Technologists may operate computed tomography (CT) equipment in conjunction with nuclear medicine procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nuclear Medicine Technology or equivalent
  • Must have and maintain a current NMTCB and/or ARRT(N) certification
  • ARRT(CT) or NMTCB-CT certification or must obtain within 1 year from start of employment (Currently ARRT(R) is acceptable in place of ARRT(CT) or NMTCB-CT certification at this current time)
  • Current South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association license
  • Currently has CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals both diagnostic and therapeutic as directed by a Radiologist.
  • Utilize specialized equipment and monitors the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs in which the radiopharmaceuticals localize.
  • Operate computed tomography (CT) equipment used in conjunction with nuclear medicine procedures.
  • Organize daily work load.
  • Order radiopharmaceuticals and kits as needed.
  • Calculate correct dosage to be administered following prescribed procedures, according to information on age, weight and physical condition.
  • Receive patients and explain procedures to them.
  • Assess patients to record any pertinent information relating to the exam.
  • Review and abstract data from the patient’s chart.
  • Set up imaging systems for studies in accordance with current imaging protocols.
  • Evaluate scan for acceptable quality prior to submitting for interpretation.
  • Schedule patients for Nuclear Medicine exams as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area to include stocking all items prior to the beginning of the work day.
  • Operate all imaging systems and related devices.
  • Perform Q.C procedures on all equipment.
  • Keep supervisor abreast of any changes in imaging systems operation to ensure proper repairs can be made in a timely manner.
  • Properly receive radioactive shipments according to DHEC regulations.
  • Perform various tasks associated with processing, distributing and storing radioactive materials.
  • Proficient in starting IV’s and injecting Radiopharmaceuticals/Saline for certain procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper fire and safety evacuations in consistently demonstrated.
  • Assist with patient transport whenever possible and necessary.
  • Volunteer and serve on various committees and work teams as requested.
  • Serve on the Radiation Disaster team and actively participate in all drills as needed.
  • Clock in/out according to the hospital policy and approve time in Kronos.
  • Attend staff meetings as required and complete all mandatory education requirements.
  • Follow through with assignments and inform supervisor of progress or problems in completing tasks.
  • Recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate lifesaving first aid.
  • Follow established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient's care which results in patient harm.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in an emergency (i.e. fire or disaster).
  • Demonstrate good public relations and service excellence at all times.
  • Adhere to policies of logging in/out of any information systems and maintain confidentiality of passwords, security codes and adhere and follow HIPAA Guidelines.
  • Serve and protect the hospital community by ensuring adherence to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements, and DNV on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards.
