About The Position

The Nuclear Medicine technologist performs a variety of diagnostic procedures and therapeutic treatments with radioactive materials and electronic department equipment in accordance with established procedures and standards. Operates scanning equipment and uploads to the digital imaging archive (PACS), prepares patient room, and maintains the supplies, medications and equipment of the Hot Lab. The technologist is responsible for ensuring patient safety, maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, and providing exceptional patient-centered care while supporting the mission and values of the organization. Practices established radiation safety precautions and is proficient in use of radiation survey equipment. Prepares daily schedule and orders radiopharmaceuticals for the next day of service in general nuclear medicine and the PET service. Rotates between the nuclear medicine sites and covers call hours when scheduled.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technologist training program.
  • Certification by the American Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
  • CPR certified.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, as needed; as well as on-call duty.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of age-related developmental issues of pediatrics and geriatrics.
  • Knowledge of nuclear medicine examinations and treatments.
  • Knowledge of nuclear medicine equipment operations and radiation safety.
  • Knowledge of patient transfer and positioning techniques.
  • Open, accurate, and responsive communications, oral or written, on an individual basis or in groups.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates ethical and professional conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Daily QA/QC testing of the full range of the department equipment prior to a patient’s procedure to verify that the equipment is in good working order. Provides simple troubleshooting and may make adjustments to equipment (when applicable).
  • Review each patient’s all demographic information and test requisition, either (hard copy or via computer system) for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis. Positively identify each patient prior to their study.
  • Perform the procedures of Nuclear Medicine (treatment, imaging, uptake measurement) in order to provide high quality studies for review by physician(s). Utilizes departmental Policy & Procedures and abides by Image Gently and Image Wisely standards.
  • Places intravenous lines for patient exams and perform injections of radioactive materials using shielded syringes. Follows care protocols to ensure infection prevention at site of injection.
  • Perform and/or assist with daily, weekly, monthly, and annual quality control testing of department equipment for quality imaging, and, to satisfy external requirements (ACR, other regulatory bodies).
  • Coordinate nuclear medicine images to ensure the quality and continuity of inpatient & outpatient care, and, assist with the workflow management of the department to ensure complete work assignments, particularly in the absence of the nuclear medicine supervisor.
  • Collaborate and contribute to the efficient operations of the department.
  • Serve, manage, and support internal and external customers. Demonstrate compassionate, patient-centered care. Provides patient education regarding examinations and post-procedure instructions.
  • Responsible for complete, accurate, and timely documentation of all patient care activities, procedures, and the regulatory requirements for the department.
  • Assists with PET/CT services by reviewing the order appropriateness to the next-day schedule, and order of correct doses.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain healthcare product inventory and notifies appropriate supervisor when stock is low.
  • Participation in or with: instruction of students, and in-service education for staff members, performance improvement activities, provide proper notification for absence or tardiness, maintains licensure(s) and healthcare related requirements.
  • Comply with HR workplace policies, dept policies, and, other duties appropriately assigned to staff in this clinical area.
