About The Position

Aalo Atomics is seeking a senior individual-contributor and leadership role to lead and own the company’s compliance program under U.S. Department of Energy regulations at 10 C.F.R. Part 810 and related U.S. trade controls. This newly created role reports to the General Counsel and will build the policies, procedures, training, and controls needed to protect Export Controlled Information (ECI) and ensure disclosures and personnel access are properly authorized. The role is a build-and-operate position with authority to approve, pause, or suspend ECI disclosures and access pending review. The manager will serve as the accountable company-wide decision-maker for Part 810 matters, while coordinating technical ECI determinations with Engineering. The role will establish release approvals and document-marking standards; coordinate DOE/NNSA communications and reporting; develop training and recordkeeping; and oversee visitor security, international travel approvals, public releases, OFAC screening, and import/export licensing compliance. The manager will also maintain controlled policy and recipient records, partner with IT and the CISO on ECI technology controls, and conduct audits to support consistent, leadership-backed compliance across Aalo’s Austin, Georgetown, and Idaho Falls facilities. The position is based in the United States and requires on-site work in Austin, Texas, as well as willingness to travel among the company’s facilities. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Persons in compliance with 10 CFR Part 810 and may not hold non-compliant foreign citizenships.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of U.S. nuclear export controls under 10 C.F.R. Part 810.
  • Familiarity with related regimes, including NRC 10 C.F.R. Part 110, the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and OFAC sanctions screening.
  • Experience building or operating an export-compliance program, including policies, procedures, training, and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to make and defend authorization decisions independently, with sound judgment and willingness to pause or suspend disclosures or access when warranted.
  • Ability to partner across Engineering, Procurement, Marketing, IT/Security, HR, and Legal, and translate technical determinations into clear release decisions.
  • Experience interfacing with federal regulators; DOE/NNSA experience is preferred.
  • Experience preparing or supporting regulatory reporting and disclosures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to train non-specialists and build a culture of compliance.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Based in the United States and willing to work on-site in Austin, Texas.
  • Willingness to travel among Aalo’s Austin, Georgetown, and Idaho Falls facilities.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person in compliance with 10 CFR Part 810 and may not hold non-compliant foreign citizenships.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building an export-compliance program in a fast-growing or startup environment where it must be established from the ground up.
  • DOE/NNSA regulatory interface experience.
  • Advanced degree, JD, or relevant technical/nuclear background.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Aalo’s designated decision-maker for company-wide Part 810 matters, with authority to approve, pause, or suspend ECI disclosures and individual access pending review; the General Counsel serves as backup decision-maker.
  • Authorize ECI releases by reviewing and approving what information may be shared and with whom, in coordination with Engineering’s technical ECI determinations.
  • Establish document-marking standards and release-approval workflows that document review, approval, and marking before external transfers.
  • Act as the single coordinated point of contact for DOE/NNSA communications and reporting, and build internal processes to capture and route required report information.
  • Build and run onboarding and annual export-control training for employees, executives, interns, consultants, and contractors within Aalo’s control; provide department-specific guidance, track completion, and hold recurring document-review office hours.
  • Design and enforce visitor and site-security procedures at Austin, Georgetown, and Idaho Falls facilities, including foreign-national screening, escorts, approved routes, photography restrictions, badging, and prevention of ECI exposure in shared spaces.
  • Own international-travel approvals involving ECI or devices that contain or access it, including precautions for screen visibility, cameras, unattended devices, and loss.
  • Establish and enforce a documented self-publication and public-release review process for photos, videos, social media, presentations, podcasts, and site tours, coordinating with the General Counsel and patent/IP counsel.
  • Reinstate and oversee OFAC screening, embed it in procurement procedures, define procurement’s export-control responsibilities, and require subject-matter-expert review before supplier exchanges.
  • Oversee import/export licensing compliance for physical equipment, including NRC requirements under 10 C.F.R. Part 110.
  • Maintain a controlled, centralized policy repository and records of signed Retransfer Assurance Agreements, NDAs, and proofs of citizenship to track ECI recipients.
  • Partner with IT and the CISO to keep ECI off non-compliant systems and personal devices, including approved transfer environments, short screen-lock timeouts, device tracking, and governance of approved versus personal AI tools.
  • Conduct periodic internal audits of actual practices and promote consistent, leadership-backed compliance while eliminating informal overrides and inaccurate guidance.
  • Travel among Aalo’s Austin, Georgetown, and Idaho Falls facilities.
