NPI Product Engineer - AI Compute Hardware

MatXMountain View, CA
$160,000 - $600,000Hybrid

About The Position

MatX is building next-generation AI compute infrastructure for large-scale LLM training and inference. We’re looking for an experienced NPI Product Engineer to serve as the technical bridge between engineering and manufacturing. This includes owning product readiness, qualification, and quality as our AI chip, compute tray, and rack-scale platform moves from design into production. You’ll work closely with hardware, mechanical, systems, test, supply chain, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure complex hardware products are built correctly, qualified on schedule, and ready to scale.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of NPI or hardware product engineering experience (PCB, server, AI compute, networking, or electronics hardware), with a proven track record introducing complex products through EVT, DVT, and PVT with JDM/ODM or contract manufacturers
  • Strong understanding of the hardware product development lifecycle from design through validation, qualification, and production ramp including DFM, DFT, and DFA for complex electronic assemblies
  • Experience defining and executing product validation and qualification plans (functional, system-level, environmental, and reliability testing) and tracking quality metrics such as defect rate, first-pass yield, and reliability
  • Experience analyzing product defects, yield data, and field/manufacturing failures, driving root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Experience working directly with JDM/ODM partners on product reviews, qualification, issue resolution, and production readiness
  • Strong understanding of BOM management, ECO processes, component qualification, and product configuration control, with familiarity with PLM tools such as Arena or Agile
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills, able to work across hardware, mechanical, supply chain, test, manufacturing, and program management, and present product status, risks, and quality data to leadership

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-power AI accelerators, GPU servers, or custom ASIC product introduction
  • Familiarity with liquid cooling system qualification and assembly
  • Experience with OCP Open Rack platform qualification, including data center rack integration and system-level product qualification
  • Knowledge of IPC standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-6012, IPC-7711/7721)
  • Familiarity with JTAG, ICT, or boundary scan methodologies
  • Experience with statistical process control and process capability analysis
  • Background in reliability engineering, including FMEA, accelerated life testing, and reliability qualification

Responsibilities

  • Own product NPI from EVT through DVT and PVT, driving product readiness, quality, and schedule at each stage gate, and lead first article inspections, qualification reviews, and manufacturing readiness reviews with JDM/ODM partners
  • Partner with hardware, mechanical, electrical, systems, and program management to define product requirements, specifications, acceptance criteria, and NPI exit criteria, and resolve product-level DFM/DFT/DFA issues
  • Develop and drive product validation and qualification plans (functional, system-level, environmental, and reliability testing), and coordinate component qualification with hardware engineering and supply chain
  • Serve as the technical interface between engineering and JDM/ODM partners, ensuring requirements and design intent are correctly translated into manufacturing and test coverage
  • Drive product quality and yield improvement by analyzing defect trends and metrics (defect rate, first-pass yield, reliability), identifying root causes, and coordinating corrective actions
  • Own product-level ECO evaluation and implementation, and drive product readiness for transition from NPI to mass production, ensuring functionality, quality, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Maintain NPI product documentation (specifications, qualification reports, validation plans, test procedures, quality records) and communicate product risks, technical issues, and readiness to engineering and leadership
