At Ciena, the NPI Mechanical Engineer plays a critical role in bringing next‑generation optical hardware from concept to production. This role focuses on designing and supporting mechanical and electromechanical fixtures, tooling, and assemblies that enable efficient product development, design validation, and early manufacturing ramps, in close partnership with cross‑functional engineering teams and Contract Manufacturers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or a Mechanical Design Engineering diploma with relevant industry experience
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical or electromechanical engineering roles
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools, with preference for Creo / ProENGINEER
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerances, and fits
  • Hands‑on experience designing or supporting test fixtures, tooling, or manufacturing equipment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with data management, enterprise resource planning, or material requirements planning systems

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with optical or optoelectronic hardware
  • Exposure to Contract Manufacturing support environments
  • Experience supporting New Product Introduction or structured product development lifecycles

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and support mechanical and electromechanical test fixtures, jigs, and assemblies used during product development and New Product Introduction (NPI)
  • Create mechanical designs for optical and optoelectronic modules, including packaging and system‑level integration
  • Develop high‑quality 3D CAD models, part drawings, and assembly drawings using Creo / ProENGINEER
  • Build, modify, and debug fixtures and test setups in laboratory and development environments
  • Support validation and qualification of test equipment to ensure reliable and repeatable results
  • Generate complete engineering documentation including bills of material, drawings, and process flows
  • Partner with manufacturing and Contract Manufacturing teams to support design transfer, early production yield, and quality improvement
