NPI Manufacturing Engineer

Multiply Labs•San Francisco, CA
•$90,000 - $180,000•Onsite

About The Position

Multiply Labs is seeking an NPI Engineer to manage the transition of their Consumable products from R&D prototypes to repeatable, in-house low-volume production, and eventually to contract manufacturing for commercialization. This role requires a strong background in medical robotics/devices and/or biopharma laboratory consumables manufacturing/automation, with expertise in design transfer, documentation, and small-scale manufacturing operations. The company is focused on solving a critical bottleneck in medicine by automating the manufacturing of life-saving advanced biologics through robotics and AI, making these therapies more accessible and affordable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • 2–8 years in manufacturing/NPI/process engineering, ideally in single-use medical device, diagnostics, or biopharma consumables manufacturing
  • Direct experience with design transfer, design controls, and documentation practices
  • Comfortable working hands-on with technicians, reading CAD/drawings, and working in a cleanroom manufacturing environment
  • Experience qualifying and working with contract manufacturers or suppliers
  • Statistical tools (SPC, capability studies) and risk management
  • Superb communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills; comfortable in a fast-paced, startup environment
  • Exceptional organization skills and proven ability to work on multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with process/equipment validation concepts (IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Prior experience at a hardware startup or robotics company
  • Familiarity with biomanufacturing or lab automation
  • Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., GMP, FDA 21 CFR 820.30, ISO 13485)
  • Experience with the manufacturing of precision machine components

Responsibilities

  • Lead design transfer from R&D prototypes to in-house pilot production, converting one-off prototype builds into controlled, repeatable processes for technicians.
  • Develop, release, and maintain build documentation, including work instructions, BOMs, LHRs, assembly drawings, inspection criteria, and test procedures, and train the manufacturing team on new content.
  • Collaborate with R&D to drive DFX (Design for Excellence) improvements.
  • Coordinate with Quality to ensure compliance with industry standards and implement risk-based quality control for products.
  • Schedule and coordinate builds with the onsite manufacturing team, and troubleshoot issues in real time.
  • Manage inventory and kitting with technician(s), and partner with supply chain/procurement on sourcing, part qualification, and vendor management.
  • Track yield, first-pass quality, and build data; drive root cause analysis and implement improvements based on data.
  • Own handoff to contract manufacturing, including selecting/qualifying CMs, transferring documentation packages, and managing the transition as volume or maturity outpaces internal capacity.

Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation: Salary range of $90,000 - $180,000 plus meaningful early-stage equity.
  • Premium Health: Premium Medical, Dental, and Vision plans with subsidies for child dependents.
  • Wealth Building: 401(k) with a 4% company match.
