About The Position

As an Experienced Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer at BPMI, you will work under limited supervision and perform moderately complex critical technical functions to execute the BPMI mission in areas including, but not limited to applying various NDE techniques to assess the integrity of materials, components, and systems. This role involves working with teams to ensure effective integration of NDE processes, ensuring compliance with NR standards, and recommending improvements. Responsibilities may include planning, modeling, documenting, and qualifying NDE techniques, analyzing inspection results, and resolving technical challenges. The engineer is responsible for maintaining high technical standards and contributing to project success, ensuring safety and quality in all aspects of their work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Materials Engineering, or related technical degree, from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced degrees (e.g., Master's, Ph.D.) may be considered as a partial substitute for required experience, depending on the relevance to the position, but may not fulfill the entire experience requirement.
  • Natural or corrected near distance acuity such that the individual is capable of reading J1 letters on the ANST 2224 Jaeger Eye Card for near vision, or equivalent type test. This requirement shall be met with either or both eyes.
  • The ability to distinguish colors to one of the following degrees: Normal color vision; no color blindness exists. Impaired color vision, but with demonstrated adequate color discrimination and contrast for the inspection method. Individuals determined to be color blind may still interpret inspection results if they can demonstrate, by inspection of test props or production pieces, that they possess adequate color discrimination and contract, and can identify the inspection materials to such a degree that their color blindness does not reduce their ability to perform the required evaluation.
  • Ability to climb ladders, traverse steep staircases, and work in tight spaces for extended durations (e.g., 8+ hours).
  • Ability to work in ambient temperatures (hot or cold) and challenging environments.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is a requirement for security clearance applicants.

  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, with strong attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Committed to maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and project scopes while ensuring consistent adherence to internal processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong desire to learn and adapt to new challenges.
  • Experience with NDT methods, primarily ultrasonic testing, along with liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, and radiographic testing.
  • Proficiency in solid modeling using CAD software.
  • Experience with mechanical systems and working in industrial settings.
  • Willingness to travel to field inspection sites by air for 1-3 week assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in laboratory, manufacturing, and in-service inspections utilizing the various NDT techniques to support technical evaluations and problem resolutions, with limited direction.
  • Integrate non-destructive evaluation methods into the larger scope of projects, ensuring alignment with system interrelationships and contributing to the achievement of project goals.
  • Apply NDE techniques to support technical evaluations and problem resolutions for NAVSEA, BPMI, NNL, shipyards, and suppliers, ensuring the effective use of the latest testing methods.
  • Design and recommend new methods of inspection and analysis, incorporating the latest NDE technologies to improve testing capabilities.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical challenges related to NDE techniques and processes, developing solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Guide less experienced engineers in applying advanced NDE techniques, providing support and ensuring effective execution.
  • Resolve technical issues related to NDE and provide actionable solutions.
  • Streamline NDE processes, reducing operational time while maintaining high quality and accuracy.
  • Contribute to the preparation of detailed technical reports and procedures in accordance with NR program quality standards.
  • Innovate new methods and technologies to streamline NDE workflows and enhance efficiency.
  • Evaluate complex systems and materials using advanced NDE methods, providing technical recommendations for process improvements.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation for Government submissions, providing technical information and recommending actions for approval or funding.
  • Prepare cost and schedule estimates for procurement and NDT development efforts.

Benefits

  • Competitive and attractive pay and benefits with a stable organization.
  • Opportunities to participate in BPMI sponsored committees and clubs, each with their own mission and purpose.
