About The Position

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers' Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. We perform biomedical/occupational research and innovation for a healthy workforce, aimed at promoting health and reducing disease and disability among workers across the nation, particularly in Oregon. The Clinical Physiology and Chronobiology Program (CPCP) within the Institute specializes in clinical research on the effects of sleep and circadian rhythms on physiology and pathophysiology in humans. This non-OHSU student worker will be involved in the conduct of human-participant research, including screening, enrolling, recruiting, and retaining research participants; coordinating study visits and research schedules; obtaining consents; and conducting blood draws and saliva sample collections. Under direct supervision, primarily collects and analyzes data either in the lab or in the field, conducts data entry and validation, conducts literature reviews, and earns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity. May perform any routine duties as directed and under the supervision of other study personnel.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in an Undergraduate program (minimum 6 credit hours).
  • Must be at least 18 years old, in order to handle blood and saliva samples in the lab.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, to prioritize effectively and achieve deadlines.
  • Ability to gather, compile, analyze and maintain, in a range of formats, information from a variety of sources, including research publications, web sources, and internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with issues of a sensitive nature and to maintain research integrity.

Nice To Haves

  • Student currently working on a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in research is highly desired.
  • Knowledge and application of gathering, compiling, and reporting research information for a peer-reviewed publication.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and analyzes data either in the lab or in the field.
  • Conducts data entry and validation.
  • Conducts literature reviews.
  • Travels to field research sites to support research activities (e.g., focus group facilitation, environmental scans, community forums, consenting individuals, data collection, etc.).
  • Assists with outreach (mailings, website, etc.).
  • Performs sample processing, assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, library research, data collection, and recording transcription.
  • Cleans and sterilizes lab instruments and surfaces.
  • Stocks lab benches with supplies.
  • Screens, enrolls, recruits, and retains research participants.
  • Coordinates study visits and research schedules.
  • Obtains consents.
  • Conducts blood draws and saliva sample collections.
  • Monitors research activities and participation.
