About The Position

The Non-Emergency Vehicle Driver / Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing safe, compassionate interfacility transportation for hospice patients while supporting direct patient care services within the Inpatient Unit (IPU) and Assisted Living Facility (ALF). This position ensures patients are transported safely, comfortably, and with dignity, while also assisting with personal care and clinical support duties when assigned to a unit. The role requires strong communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to respond appropriately in changing clinical situations.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • DOT Physical
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license in good standing.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record for previous 5 years.
  • BLS certification and First Aid.
  • Ability to pass background check
  • Substance screening (including alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP)); screening to include Pre-Employment, Random screening, post-accident screening, and return to duty screening.
  • Ability to safely lift, transfer, and move patients (minimum 50 lbs.).
  • Must obtain Certified Transport Specialist (CTS) within 6 months of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license.
  • Current CNA certification
  • Clean driving record with the ability to meet Mesilla Valley Hospice insurance requirements.
  • Current automobile insurance if using a personal vehicle for hospice business.
  • Ability to safely assist patients with limited mobility.
  • Ability to lift, push, or assist with mobility equipment in accordance with established safety practices.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality.
  • Current CPR certification or willingness to obtain within the required timeframe.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in hospice, long-term care, or hospital setting.
  • Previous medical transport or ambulance driving experience.
  • Knowledge of basic life support procedures, and first aid.
  • Experience in hospice, home health, healthcare transportation, senior care, or patient services.
  • Knowledge of Southern New Mexico roadways and surrounding communities.
  • Experience working with elderly or medically fragile individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate agency Non-Emergency Transport Vehicle in compliance with all state and federal regulations.
  • Operate vehicle in compliance with all traffic laws and safety regulations, using defensive driving techniques.
  • Transport patients between facilities, hospitals, homes, ALFs, and Mesilla Valley Hospice inpatient unit.
  • Assist with patient loading and unloading using proper body mechanics and equipment.
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during transport.
  • Communicate transport updates with nursing staff and receiving facilities.
  • Complete all required transport documentation accurately and timely.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure mechanical and safety systems are in working order; report any defects promptly.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness, readiness, and fuel levels.
  • Provide direct patient care including bathing, grooming, toileting, repositioning, feeding, and ambulation assistance.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the nurse.
  • Assist with vital signs as directed.
  • Support comfort measures in alignment with hospice philosophy of care.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment.
  • Assist nursing staff during admissions, discharges, and post-mortem care as needed.
