About The Position

Under general supervision, this role is responsible for assisting ophthalmologists and optometrists in performing basic technical procedures, gathering data, and administering treatments as directed. The position involves managing patient flow, performing routine tests, assisting with surgical procedures, and maintaining a well-stocked and organized clinical environment.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of basic medical anatomy, eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications.
  • Knowledge of standard medical abbreviations.
  • Ability to read and understand clinical exam notes and documentation.
  • Understanding and adherence to proper sterile techniques.
  • Understanding, communication, and adherence to rules regarding patient consent for procedures.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High school education or GED required.
  • No experience required.
  • Must attain JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 1 year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing patients for examinations.
  • Assisting ophthalmologists during examinations.
  • Ensuring a steady and even flow of patients through the clinic.
  • Performing routine and standardized tasks.
  • Testing (measuring and recording) basic ocular function.
  • Assisting ophthalmologists with surgical procedures.
  • Sterilizing surgical instruments.
  • Changing dressings and instructing patients and/or family members on in-home care.
  • Maintaining the appearance and stocking of supplies and forms in exam rooms.
  • Maintaining ophthalmic instruments by cleaning exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms, and replacing burned-out bulbs.
  • Reporting missing or unserviceable equipment to the lead technician.
  • Performing efficient, accurate, and legible patient workups, including patient interviews, obtaining and documenting medical history, medication history, chief complaint, and healthcare information maintenance.
  • Administering eye and oral medications as directed by the ophthalmologist.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
