About The Position

The Non-CDL Bus Driver is responsible for operating a school bus to transport children to and from school and related activities safely and on time. This role requires maintaining route schedules, managing student behavior, ensuring the vehicle is properly maintained and clean, and adhering to all district policies and procedures. The driver will also be responsible for operating adaptive transportation equipment for special education students and handling emergency situations.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age
• Must attend in-service training classes and safety meetings
• Must have empathy for children
• Know federal, state, local and school district regulations, procedures and laws as relating to operating a passenger vehicle
• Ability to carry out written and oral instructions
• Ability to control groups of children
• Ability to read and map
• Willing and able to submit to substance abuse testing as prescribed by Federal DOT
• Able to meet or exceed annual state required physical examination

Responsibilities

• Operate a school bus on an assigned route in transporting children to and from school, as well as related activities, in a safe, timely manner.
• Maintain, read and understand route sheets including time changes and notify supervisor immediately of any deviations.
• Maintain scheduled route to established time and mileage as best possible.
• Exercise student management through correct use of communication and discipline and report discipline problems through proper school district procedures.
• Maintain good work habits through timeliness and low absenteeism for daily assignment and extra trips.
• Properly care for vehicle and its component parts as prescribed by the distance to minimize wear and to extend its useful life.
• Operate the bus two-way radio correctly and according to district policy.
• Inspect each vehicle before and after each trip using the correct procedure and complete the pre and post trip inspection forms.
• Operate the vehicle and stop to allow passengers to board and disembark using safe and responsible procedures.
• (Special Education Drivers) Operate adaptive transportation equipment to board and discharge challenged passengers using safe and responsible procedures.
• Keep bus clean and orderly with daily cleaning after each route operated as well as check for lost items.
• Maintain a presentable appearance, which includes being properly dressed in district uniforms, neat grooming and good hygiene.
• Maintain a cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisor, parents, and school personnel, always-promoting district goodwill.
• Must be able and willing to fuel bus in accordance with district standards.
• Must be able to control emergency situation in a proper manner.
• Must complete bus evacuation drills to local school district and state government standards.
• Must be able and willing to complete and turn in all required documentation to the transportation office in a timely and accurate manner.
• Successfully complete a driving skill evaluation.
• Attend all required in-service training; company required meetings and training as well as any other required meetings.
• Check the bus at the conclusion of each run to ensure that no children have been left on the bus.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

• The district contributes $400/monthly to the cost of "employee-only" health insurance which is $175/monthly greater than the state required amount of $225/monthly.
