About The Position

The NICU Manager is accountable for coordinating the ongoing development and productivity of a work unit or units and for maintaining the quality of care within that work unit and/or programs. This role assists the CNO/Director with operational planning and provides daily work direction to achieve unit level of care and organizational objectives. The Manager contributes to budget development and maintains responsibility for achieving budgetary objectives. They supervise staff, including hiring, coaching and counseling, and assuring performance appraisals are completed. The role ensures that productivity and quality are tracked and maintained, and collaborates with the Director and Interdisciplinary Team to standardize, update, and/or maintain policies and procedures. The NICU Manager assures quality care and compliance with internal standards and regulatory and accreditation bodies. They collaborate with marketing and community care departments regarding the development, marketing, implementation, and evaluation of programs as appropriate. This position assumes 24-hour responsibility and accountability for the program and participates as directed in the annual operational planning process, executing priorities to ensure implementation of the operation plan within the program. The Manager promotes staff accountability and empowerment through formal and informal mechanisms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • 2 Years in clinical tertiary NICU care.
  • California Registered Nurse (RN) - CA Board of Registered Nursing -REQUIRED
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - Various-Employee provides certificate -REQUIRED
  • At least three years experience in a tertiary care NICU setting.
  • Managerial/Supervisory skills — demonstrated ability to remain flexible in rapid change environment and current health care dynamic climate.
  • Two or more years in a leadership position.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, design, implement, and evaluate one's own work and to work independently with minimal observation or supervision.
  • Human Relations skills — demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to work collaboratively with multiple others of diverse cultures, education background, experience, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of team building skills and principles of self-managed work teams.
  • Political Process skills — ability to function well under condition of current environment; ability to collaborate with multiple others; ability to build partnerships with physicians and others.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field preferred
  • Certification in NICU and Nursing Leadership by a nursing accredited body.

  • Identifying and trending learning needs of staff and working with CNS to assure needs are met.
  • Assuring that the standards of care are implemented, evaluated, and updated.
  • Assuring delivery of quality patient care that meets all accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Reviewing, revising, developing, and maintaining safety policies and procedures related to department activities and work environment.
  • Reviewing current operations and assessing appropriateness of and compliance with safety policies.
  • Working proactively with Biomed, Risk Management, and others to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Maintaining operating unit or units within budgeted cost per UOS.
  • Developing achievable action plans when actual exceeds budgeted cost per UOS.
  • Contributing to the identification of and operationalizing cost reduction measures or identifying revenue enhancing opportunities.
  • Maintaining unit and/or units productivity greater than 97%.
  • Participating in annual budget development and making recommendations as needed to the Director.
  • Assuring that staff performance appraisals are conducted in a timely manner.
  • Coaching, counseling, and instituting developmental and corrective action plans as necessary.
  • Assuring appropriate staff and skill mix for optimal unit functioning.
  • Assuring that all pertinent information is provided to staff through staff meetings and other forms of formal and informal communication.
  • Enabling staff to participate in scheduling and staffing.
  • Assuring schedule is posted within designated time frame.
  • Assisting staff to access services provided by Human Resources (e.g. EAP).
  • Maintaining up-to-date employee records.
  • Effectively instituting change, supporting unit, level of care, and organizational goals.
  • Maintaining a positive and productive relationship with the medical staff, peers, patients, families, directors, and senior administrator.
  • Identifying unit level of care or organizational problems, developing and/or contributing to a plan to resolve problems.
  • Implementing and/or assisting with plans to achieve resolution.
  • Demonstrating effective team building.
  • Leading and/or participating on task forces for system integration.
  • Consistently communicating in a positive and timely manner with staff members, Sharp employees, physicians, patients, and visitors.
