About The Position

KDKA TV is seeking a skilled, adaptable News Video & Assignment Desk Editor to support daily newsgathering and production in a fast paced, legacy newsroom. This hybrid role plays a critical part in how stories are assigned, developed, and ultimately presented to viewers across broadcast and digital platforms. The ideal candidate understands Pittsburgh, understands breaking news, and understands how a story evolves from the first scanner hit to the final edit in the rundown.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2–4 years of experience in a television news environment
  • Strong non linear video editing skills (Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, or similar)
  • Experience working an assignment desk or in close coordination with one
  • Solid news judgment and understanding of journalistic ethics
  • Ability to multitask and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills
  • Flexible schedule, including early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and breaking news

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a large market or O&O newsroom
  • Familiarity with CBS News & Stations workflows
  • Understanding of digital and social video requirements
  • Ability to assist with basic writing or digital publishing when needed

Responsibilities

  • Edit video for daily KDKA newscasts, special reports, and digital coverage
  • Work closely with producers, reporters, and photographers to build clear, compelling stories
  • Select strong video, natural sound, and pacing appropriate for a CBS O&O newscast
  • Edit VO/SOTs, packages, teases, and elements for breaking news and planned coverage
  • Turn content quickly and accurately under deadline pressure
  • Maintain KDKA editorial, technical, and production standards
  • Manage and organize video within newsroom systems
  • Assist in daily news coverage by monitoring scanners, social media, tips, and developing stories
  • Help assign crews and resources in coordination with news management
  • Maintain constant communication with reporters, photographers, producers, and managers
  • Track story progress throughout the day and provide updates for newscasts and digital teams
  • Answer phones, vet viewer tips, and route information quickly and responsibly
  • Support coverage decisions during breaking news, severe weather, and major events
  • Serve as a bridge between the assignment desk and the edit bay, especially during breaking news
  • Step into either role as newsroom needs demand
  • Support extended coverage during major local, regional, or national news events
  • Maintain situational awareness of editorial priorities across all platforms
