About The Position
Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer are seeking a News Reporter to cover Lorain County, Ohio. The role focuses heavily on information gathering, source development, record digging, and exploring the beat, with a rewrite specialist transforming findings into full stories using artificial intelligence. The reporter will cover one of Northeast Ohio's fastest-growing and most varied counties, encompassing diverse areas from rural to industrial to suburban. The position involves county-wide accountability coverage, including county commissioners, courts, sheriff's office, city councils, school boards, zoning meetings, and breaking news. The reporter will file multiple posts daily, working with an AI rewrite desk that crafts stories for cleveland.com, allowing the reporter to concentrate on reporting, gathering information, talking to sources, meeting people in the community, and delving into reporting.
Requirements
- A degree in journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
- At least 3 years of professional journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.
- Collaborative instincts and excellent communication skills.
- Curiosity, adaptability and comfort with experimentation and innovation, including with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or newsroom-specific applications).
- Reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events.
Responsibilities
