About The Position

WECT News has been Where News Comes First in Southeastern North Carolina for over 70 years. We're the NBC affiliate in the rapidly growing Wilmington market, serving New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Pender, and Bladen counties that make up the beautiful coastal Cape Fear Region. WECT is the most accessible local news outlet in our market, with WECT.com, News & Weather apps, and streaming platforms. WECT is the dominant #1 station in the market. Are you a visual storyteller who lives for the "wow" factor? Do you thrive on the adrenaline of a breaking story and the satisfaction of a deep-dive community piece? We’re looking for a Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) who doesn't just report the news but owns it—across every screen. Whether you’re crafting a lead for one of our on-air newscasts, going live on our streaming newscasts in the WECT Digital Studio, or engaging with our audience on social, you’ll be the heartbeat of the Cape Fear region. If you’re a scrappy, digital-first journalist who wants to make a real impact in southeastern North Carolina, let’s talk.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field preferred
  • Strong writing skills (broadcast and print style)
  • Experience with CMS/digital publishing platforms
  • Experience with broadcast newsroom software such as ENPS
  • Experience with video editing software (preferably Edius)
  • Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs and pass a motor vehicle background check

Nice To Haves

  • A digital-first mindset: You understand that "news" happens 24/7, and you’re ready to feed the beast on social and streaming first.
  • Killer storytelling skills: You know how to find the "human" element in every story and make it resonate with an audience.
  • Technical chops: You’re a pro with a camera and an editing suite (and you’re not afraid to learn new tools as they emerge).
  • Sharp news judgment: You know what’s important, what’s interesting, and how to tell the difference under pressure.
  • A positive, "can-do" attitude: You’re a team player who lifts others up and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Urgency and empathy: You care about the stories you tell and the people they affect, and you move fast to get them right.
  • Flexibility: News doesn't follow a 9-to-5 schedule, and neither do you—you’re ready to go where the story takes you.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop compelling content from initial concept to final publication across digital, social, and broadcast platforms.
  • Create platform-specific content that meets our audience where they are—on their phones, their TVs, and everywhere in between.
  • Write, edit, and produce high-quality stories with speed, accuracy, and a killer creative eye.
  • Jump into breaking news situations with authority and calm, keeping our community informed in real-time.
  • Build deep roots in the Cape Fear region, developing sources and uncovering the stories that truly matter to our neighbors.
  • Take advantage of potential anchoring opportunities to lead our coverage and connect directly with viewers.

Benefits

  • Equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetics.
  • Compliance with applicable state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment.
  • Prohibition of any form of workplace harassment based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, or veteran status.
