About The Position

Nature's news team is seeking an ambitious science reporter for a January-June 2027 internship. This is a paid, full-time writing position based in our Washington DC or New York City offices, operating on a hybrid model. Nature is an international journal that publishes groundbreaking research, and its independent newsroom produces essential stories about science and science policy. Interns are treated as staff reporters, covering cutting-edge science and activities at US science agencies. They will travel locally for stories as needed and write for both the website and print magazine. Initially, interns will be assigned stories, with the expectation that they will eventually pitch their own. While primarily covering news, there will be opportunities to write features. The ideal candidates will possess a strong background in both science and journalism, with a passion for writing stories for an audience of researchers, administrators, and decision-makers. Past interns have secured staff positions at notable publications.

Requirements

A University degree in a relevant subject.
Capable of working in a deadline-driven environment.
Contributes to an inclusive, collegial work environment.
Strong background in science and journalism.
Enthusiastic about writing stories for an audience of researchers, administrators and decision makers.
Cover letter detailing contributions and desired topics.
Resume.
3-5 samples of published journalism (reported pieces, not scientific papers or technical writing).

Background in science preferred, but not required (applicants who have published science journalism articles previously or completed a science writing/journalism programme will be weighted more heavily).
