About The Position

The News Director is responsible for overseeing and taking part in the newsgathering efforts of the station for broadcast, Web, and social media. Serving as assignment editor for two other reporters. Supervising, editing and critiquing performance of two Anchor/Reporters. Contributing and supervising contributions of spot news and features to NPR programs and newscasts. Coordinating with senior management on special events and coverage. Coordinating with other News Directors and public radio staff across the state. Serves as a substitute anchor when needed and maintain station compliance with FCC, CPB regulations and journalistic ethics.

Requirements

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the company.
  • A collaborative team player, who can coordinate work effectively with employees, team members, and outside vendors.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • High attention to detail, demonstrated practice of establishing effective priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong customer service with a can-do attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to identify stories of import to community while rapidly assimilating relevant information on short notice.
  • Mastery of writing skills.
  • Knowledge of website content management systems.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press Stylebook.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Must have 5 – 7 years of reporting experience in radio, print, TV, or online newsroom.
  • Experience with digital audio recording and editing equipment required.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally and within state for news coverage required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Adobe Audition preferred.
  • Experience in radio or public media news production preferred.
  • Experience managing a radio, print, TV, or online newsroom preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in day-to-day news gathering, interviews newsmakers, edits, produces, and voices news reports and features.
  • Develops daily/weekly/monthly/annual news coverage plans.
  • Supervises, edits and schedules two anchor/reporters.
  • Maintains and supervises digital news coverage and social media news feeds.
  • Maintains station compliance with FCC, CPB regulations and journalistic ethics.
  • Collaborates with partner stations on news coverage & coordinate coverage of special events with senior management.
  • Maintains inventory of station equipment.
  • Represents station to public at community events or responding to audience comments.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
