About The Position

Newborn Screening Social Worker will function as a coordinator of services statewide in response to the NC State Laboratory follow-up protocol for metabolic newborn screening. The social worker will collaborate with the State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH) to provide follow-up for abnormal newborn screening results for specific conditions from the Recommended Universal Screening Panel (RUSP). The social worker will continue to monitor these children until a final result/diagnosis is made. Administrative responsibilities include documentation of follow-up in the web-based newborn screening database, as well as the development and revision of follow-up protocols in collaboration with SLPH staff, medical specialists, and the newborn screening (NBS) advisory committee. Newborn screening education and training is vital in order to raise the awareness of health care professionals and the general public. The social worker will assist the newborn screening follow-up team within the Unit with educational presentations and technical assistance relative to newborn screening to public and private health care providers as well as to the lay public as requested by the NBS Follow-up Coordinator. The social worker will provide back up coverage on a short-term basis for the other members of the newborn screening follow-up team as required and will provide a coverage calendar to the Unit Manager for approval and subsequent notification to the SLPH. Other responsibilities include assisting in creation of program materials, participation in Unit staff meetings and other committees as requested by the NBS Follow-up Coordinator.

Requirements

Master’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution.
OR Bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience.
OR Master’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience.
OR Bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience.
OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

Strong case management skills with exceptional organizational skills to manage a continuous case load and provide thorough documentation of activities.
Experience working with health care professionals who serve newborns or young children and their families.
Ability to communicate precisely with high degree of accuracy and clarity.
Basic computer skills and be able to learn new information systems easily and quickly; experience in the use of Microsoft software applications is a plus (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
Knowledge of Community resources as they relate to families of children with special health care needs.

Responsibilities
