The Newborn Hearing Screener position is within the Audiology Department and is scheduled on a Per Diem basis. This role contributes to BMC's Vision 2030, aiming to make Boston the healthiest urban population in the world.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma Required
  • Requires effective interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain harmonious relationships
  • Requires the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively
  • Requires travel for job related purposes

Responsibilities

  • Screens the hearing of newborn infants in the nursery
  • Schedules follow-up diagnostic appointments when needed
  • Documents findings and communicates results to parents and hospital personnel
  • Screens the hearing of newborn infants in the nursery by using otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) test
  • Counsels parents of newborns regarding screening procedures, results, and any need for follow-up
  • Documents screening results and any follow-up appointments in the hospital and electronic medical records according to protocol
  • Forwards results to DPH, national registers, etc.
  • Schedules diagnostic audiology follow-up appointments as needed for infants who do not pass newborn hearing screening or are identified in the nursery as being at high risk for developing hearing loss
  • Interacts and works with related services, such as pediatrics, neonatalogy, and nursing etc. to ensure continuity of patient care
  • Reports problems to pertinent medical personnel at the time of screening and to newborn hearing screening coordinator
  • Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures
