Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a comprehensive network of support and care, serving as the largest and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England. It is committed to providing excellent and accessible health services as the largest safety-net hospital in the region. BMC is also the primary teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and a founding partner of Boston HealthNet. The organization aims to achieve Vision 2030, making Boston the healthiest urban population globally. The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program at BMC is designed to assist newly licensed nurses in their transition to practice, aiming to reduce turnover and enhance critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills, thereby improving patient outcomes and nurse satisfaction. This comprehensive program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies. New graduate nurses are hired in cohorts, and after a 4-month training period, they will assume a position on a Surgical Step Down (IMCU) unit. The role is specifically for nurses who have graduated from nursing school within the twelve months prior to their hire date. It involves nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the healthcare continuum. The registered nurse is responsible for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes, adhering to the nursing department's model of care and established agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice.
