New Graduate RN - Acute Care - Nights
About The Position
VCU Health offers a 12-month Nurse Residency Program for all new graduate nurses, designed in collaboration with the VCU School of Nursing. This program supports the transition into practice, focusing on developing clinical leadership, decision-making skills, and hands-on learning to ensure readiness for exceptional patient care. The Acute Care Unit at Tappahannock Hospital treats medical/surgical patients with various acute conditions and is equipped with 24 private rooms, with the capability to convert six to semi-private rooms for a total of 30 patients. The unit includes telemetry monitoring and negative pressure rooms. The staff includes RNs, LPNs, Patient Care Techs, and Unit Secretaries, managed by a Nurse Director and a Clinical Coordinator. Staffing is adjusted based on patient census and acuity. Initial nursing assessments are completed within 24 hours of admission, with reassessments every 12 hours or as per policy.
Requirements
- Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
- Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
- Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
- All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Nice To Haves
- Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clin I)
- Academic Health Care Experience; Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clin II, Clin III)
- Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program (for Clin I, Clin II, Clin III)
- Certification in specialty area (for Clin III)
Responsibilities
- Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
- Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
- All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
- Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RN's, LPN's, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
