About The Position

Reporting to the Manager of Integrated Health Services, the New Graduate Nurse supports the delivery of safe, compassionate, culturally respectful, and community-based nursing care to individuals and families in the Eskasoni community. This role is intended for a nurse transitioning from nursing education into professional practice and provides orientation, mentorship, teamwork, and ongoing learning within Eskasoni Health Centre.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing within the last twelve months.
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing required.
  • Current or pending registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing, with eligibility to meet all licensing requirements prior to independent practice.
  • Current BLS certification, including active First Aid and CPR at the Health Care Provider level.
  • Completed Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, or ability to obtain as required.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle, with ability to travel within the Eskasoni area as required.
  • Demonstrated interest in community health, primary care, health promotion, chronic disease prevention and management, and working with individuals and families across the lifespan.
  • Ability to provide culturally respectful, trauma informed, person and family centered care.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to document accurately and communicate respectfully with clients, families, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Developing critical thinking, decision-making, time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with willingness to seek support, feedback, and mentorship as needed.
  • Ability to work independently within scope and as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to learn and develop competence in areas such as wound care, diabetes care, foot care, palliative care, electronic medical records, and other community-based nursing services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, compassionate, culturally respectful, trauma informed, person and family centered nursing care to individuals and families in the Eskasoni community.
  • Use the nursing process, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care within the graduate nurse scope of practice and with appropriate supervision, mentorship, and support.
  • Support care planning, health teaching, health promotion, chronic disease prevention and management, wound care, medication-related nursing interventions, and other nursing duties appropriate to the role.
  • Work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, community programs, and family supports to contribute to coordinated, holistic care across the lifespan.
  • Communicate relevant patient information, changes in condition, and care concerns to the appropriate nurse, manager, provider, or team member in a timely and professional manner.
  • Document assessments, interventions, observations, care provided, and client outcomes accurately and in accordance with Eskasoni Health Centre policies, professional standards, and program requirements.
  • Practice according to the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics, the Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards of Practice, applicable legislation, and Eskasoni Health Centre policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional accountability by recognizing personal knowledge and skill limits and seeking guidance or escalation when client needs are outside current competence, role expectations, or scope of practice.
  • Participate in orientation, mentorship, continuing education, reflective practice, quality improvement, and professional development activities that support the transition from nursing education into professional practice.
  • Contribute to a respectful, safe, inclusive, and collaborative workplace that supports client safety, cultural safety, occupational health and safety, and continuous quality improvement.
