About The Position

The New ER Doctor (NERD) program is a six-month intensive training program designed to transition practicing veterinarians into confident ER doctors at VEG. It combines academic and clinical training with mentorship, covering a wide range of emergency medicine topics, including exotic animals, surgery, endoscopy, and customer-focused care in an open-concept hospital setting. The program aims to foster a passion for emergency veterinary medicine and provide a meaningful career path.

Requirements

  • A passion for helping people and their pets.
  • A valid DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.
  • 1+ year of experience as a practicing veterinarian.
  • A strong desire to work in emergency medicine.
  • A valid license to practice veterinary medicine and a valid DEA registration in the state of the program by the start date.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing for prolonged hours, kneeling, working on the floor, lifting up to 25 kg independently, and supporting up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with diverse individuals.
  • Commitment to a predetermined schedule for a consecutive six-month period.
  • Empathy and a people-centric approach.
  • Humility, including acknowledging mistakes, sharing credit, and supporting team accomplishments.
  • A strong sense of ownership and commitment to achieving impactful results.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside experienced VEG doctors for hands-on learning and mentorship through real ER cases.
  • Gain firsthand ER experience through 3-4 hospital shifts per week (days, swings, nights).
  • Participate in weekly case discussions, literature reviews, and hands-on training.
  • Learn and implement VEG's client-centered communication and care practices.
  • Earn over 160 RACE-approved CE hours during the six-month program, including training in point-of-care ultrasound, exotic animal emergencies, flexible GI endoscopy, small animal emergency surgery, critical care, and CPR certification.
