Requirements

  • A passion for helping people and their pets.
  • A valid DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.
  • 1+ year of experience as a practicing veterinarian.
  • A strong desire to work in emergency medicine.
  • A valid license to practice veterinary medicine and a valid DEA registration in the state of practice by the start date.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor, lift up to 25 kg independently, and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with diverse individuals.
  • Commitment to a predetermined schedule for a consecutive six-month period.
  • Must be willing to relocate for the NERD program.
  • Successful completion of the program, including required competencies and benchmarks, to be guaranteed a full-time ER doctor position at a VEG hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside experienced VEG doctors who provide mentorship and feedback on real ER cases.
  • Gain hands-on ER experience through 3-4 hospital shifts per week (days, swings, and nights).
  • Participate in weekly case discussions, literature reviews, and hands-on training.
  • Learn and implement client-centered communication and care practices, the VEG Way.
  • Attend various CE experiences including point-of-care ultrasound, exotic companion animals in the ER, flexible GI endoscopy, small animal emergency surgery, small animal critical care lab, and RECOVER ALS and BLS Rescuer CPR certification.
