About The Position

The Nevada Riparian Restoration Project Manager will further The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals by planning and implementing substantial wet meadow and riparian restoration projects with partners primarily in the Elko Bureau of Land Management (BLM) District as part of a six-state restoration effort between TNC and the BLM. In this role, you will focus on the complex demands of implementing low-tech process-based restoration projects from initial watershed prioritization to post-implementation monitoring, working closely and continuously with BLM and additional partners to restore high-priority riparian resources. Requirements

  • BA/BS, law or business degree and 5 years’ experience in natural resource management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
  • Experience designing and implementing restoration projects.
  • Valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program.
  • Must meet the requirements of The Nature Conservancy's background screening process.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
  • Experience working with federal land management agencies, especially Bureau of Land Management in the Intermountain West.
  • Experience implementing scientific monitoring protocols, specifically the BLM’s riparian, rangeland, and stream assessment, inventory, and monitoring procedures.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and riparian restoration or ecology.
  • Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience in training, curriculum design, or workplan or strategy development.
  • Experience working with community-based or collaborative settings to create shared outcomes for diverse groups of people.
  • Experience designing and implementing low-tech and process-based restoration projects, especially riparian or aquatic restoration.
  • Writing grants to help landowners and land managers implement restoration projects.
  • Experience working in remote locations with reliable internet and minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the necessary designs, permits, and clearances to plan wet meadow and riparian restoration projects.
  • Select, contract with, and oversee the work crews used to implement restoration projects.
  • Co-develop knowledge and expertise through an active Community of Practice with TNC and other colleagues from across the West to collectively problem solve, understand complex issues, and leverage experience and results that help the BLM accomplish its mission managing our public lands.
  • Organize trainings and foster collaborative efforts to help instill a legacy of durable restoration into the future.
  • Provides technical leadership and support to the Nevada business unit by developing, planning, directing and implementing a riparian restoration project in Nevada.
  • Gains cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
  • Works within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and assisting with fundraising.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
