About The Position

This is a part-time position (0.5 FTE) for a Neurodiagnostic Technologist II at Advocate Health. The role involves performing and maintaining competency in various neurodiagnostic tests, including electroencephalograms (EEGs) and portable inpatient EEGs. The technologist will prepare patients for exams, gather patient history, explain procedures, and perform tests according to laboratory standards, implementing alternative methods as needed to obtain optimal recordings. Responsibilities also include recognizing and managing artifacts, troubleshooting equipment, and potentially assisting with intraoperative monitoring, ambulatory EEG monitoring, WADAS, EMUs, Evoked Potentials, Nerve Conduction Studies, EMGs, Cerebral Death Evaluation studies, and TCDs. The position requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.

Requirements

Electroencephalographic Technologist registration (R EEG T) issued by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) needs to be obtained within 1 year
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
High School Graduate.
Typically requires 2 years of experience in a Neurodiagnostic Tech role.
Excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.
Intermediate computer skills.
Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
Position requires travel. May be exposed to road and weather hazards.
Must sit, stand, walk, twist, and lift throughout the workday.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
Work environment may contain potential for exposure to blood and body fluids or other unpleasant fumes or hazards and, therefore, must have ability to work in that type of environment and wear protective clothing as necessary.
Exposed to normal office environment.

Responsibilities

Performs and maintains competency in electroencephalograms, portable inpatient EEGs by applying suitable electrodes on predetermined positions on the patient's head, checking the performance of the electrodes, calibrating and adjusting the test apparatus and selecting both predetermined and special electrode combinations dependent on the individual case under study.
Prepares patient for exam and performs exams and procedures. Gathers a comprehensive patient history, appropriate information from patient, patient's records and family members to include neurological symptomatology and medications. Explains test procedures to patient and family members.
Performs procedures according to the laboratory standards and implements alternative methods and/or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recordings. This may include appropriate control setting changes on the equipment, use of extra electrodes, extra montages and use of activation procedures.
Recognizes patient or environmental artifact. Documents, eliminates or takes proper measure to monitor the artifact.
Devises and standardizes neurodiagnostic tests for clinic use.
May perform Intraoperative Monitoring with supervision.
May perform ambulatory EEG monitoring, EEG monitoring during intracarotid Sodium Amytal procedures (WADAS), Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMUs), Evoke Potentials and other modalities of testing based on site specific needs.
May assist physicians in outpatient department clinics with Nerve Conduction Studies and EMGs based on site specific needs
Performs Cerebral Death Evaluation studies.
May perform TCD (transcranial ultra sound of the Circle of Willis) based on site specific needs.
Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to supervisor immediately.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient's age served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
