About The Position

Performs and maintains competency in electroencephalograms, portable inpatient EEGs, and other modalities of testing. This includes applying electrodes, calibrating equipment, and selecting appropriate electrode combinations based on the patient's condition. The role also involves preparing patients for exams, gathering patient history, explaining procedures, and performing tests according to laboratory standards. The technician must recognize and manage artifacts, troubleshoot equipment issues, and perform clerical duties such as scheduling and charge entry. Additionally, the position requires patient positioning and transporting, which involves lifting and pushing/pulling, and demonstrating knowledge of age-specific care.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in neurodiagnostics or similar direct patient care.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Must sit, stand, walk, twist, and lift throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • Ability to work in an environment with potential for exposure to blood and body fluids or other unpleasant fumes or hazards and wear protective clothing as necessary.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to sharp instruments (EMG needles).

Responsibilities

  • Performs and maintains competency in electroencephalograms, portable inpatient EEGs, ambulatory EEG monitoring, EEG monitoring during intracarotid Sodium Amytal procedures (WADAS), Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMUs), Evoke Potentials, and other modalities of testing.
  • Applies suitable electrodes on predetermined positions on the patient's head, checks electrode performance, calibrates and adjusts test apparatus, and selects electrode combinations.
  • Prepares patient for exam and performs exams and procedures.
  • Gathers a comprehensive patient history, appropriate information from patient, patient's records and family members to include neurological symptomatology and medications.
  • Explains test procedures to patient and family members.
  • Performs procedures according to the laboratory standards and implements alternative methods and/or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recordings.
  • Recognizes patient or environmental artifact, documents, eliminates or takes proper measure to monitor the artifact.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to supervisor immediately.
  • Performs clerical duties as required including scheduling of procedures, archiving of studies and charge entry.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the departmental policies and procedures.
