About The Position

Pilgrims Hospice Society is seeking a compassionate, experienced Neuro-Affirming Child & Youth Support Contractor to support children and teens participating in our Child, Teen & Family Grief Support Program. This role provides neuro-affirming support to children and youth with diverse learning, sensory, behavioural, emotional, and accessibility needs within a grief support group setting. The successful contractor will work alongside facilitators and volunteers to help create an inclusive environment where every child feels safe, understood, and able to participate in ways that work for the participant. This is a casual contract position. Contractors are engaged on a per-group basis for each eight-week program, with occasional opportunities to support family drop-in events and Connect Groups.

Requirements

  • Education in disability studies, special education, child and youth care, psychology, social work, occupational therapy, behavioural sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent children and youth, including (but not limited to) Autism, ADHD, OCD, learning disabilities, anxiety, and other developmental, behavioural, or mental health needs.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in group settings.
  • Knowledge of neuro-affirming, strengths-based, and accessibility-focused practices.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and the impact of grief and loss on children and youth.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • The ability to remain calm, flexible, and responsive in emotionally sensitive situations.
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide a current satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check prior to contract commencement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience facilitating or supporting grief programs is considered a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support for children and teens requiring additional accommodations during grief support groups.
  • Collaborate with facilitators to create an accessible, inclusive, and emotionally safe group environment.
  • Utilize neuro-affirming approaches that respect each child's unique communication style, sensory needs, and regulation strategies.
  • Support participants experiencing challenges with emotional regulation, transitions, engagement, or sensory processing.
  • Assist with adapting activities as needed to support meaningful participation.
  • Help maintain a calm, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Child, Teen & Family team while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Participate in brief pre- and post-group team check-ins.
