About The Position

This is a non-represented position within the Municipality of Anchorage's Information Technology Department, located at City Hall. The role involves the installation, monitoring, operation, repair, documentation, and maintenance of telecommunications and data equipment, including metallic and fiber-optic cabling. Responsibilities include programming and configuring network switches, telephone systems, and other communication equipment, as well as connecting telephones and switches to the network. The technician will perform complex tasks related to network operations, installations, and maintenance for various locations, test and repair cables, and coordinate telecommunications and data services. Additionally, the role supports voicemail systems, Next Generation 911 services, emergency alerting, and decommissioning of legacy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Installation and monitoring of telecommunications and data equipment and associated cabling.
  • Operation, repairing, documenting, and maintenance of telecommunications and data equipment and associated cabling, both metallic and fiber-optic.
  • Programming and configuring data network switches, telephone switches, key telephone systems, and other communications equipment.
  • Connecting telephones and switches to the network ensuring proper function.
  • Relocating equipment daily to meet customer's needs.
  • Performing complex tasks relating to network operations, installations, and maintenance for local, off-site, and remote locations.
  • Testing cables, both metallic and fiber-optic, for performance characteristics and adherence to standards and performing repairs as needed.
  • Ordering, documenting, and coordinating telecommunications and data services.
  • Monitoring contractor and vendor activities in support of new systems and services.
  • Programming, configuring, and troubleshooting voice mail, menus, and announcement systems and services in response to customer needs.
  • Providing support for Next Generation 911 (NG911) and associated call recording services and equipment.
  • Supporting non-emergency call recording.
  • Supporting Emergency alerting, paging, and scripting.
  • Decommissioning and recycling/disposing of legacy equipment.
  • Data centers build out.
  • Mobile Wi-Fi (MIFI) Cradle point.
